What exactly is the rev limiter?

Might be a basic question, but what is the rev limiter?

Just curious, is it an electronic device that cuts fuel or is it a physical boundary?

Just wondering, cuse just recently ive decided to "push" my car to its boundaries (this month ive been REALLY practicing my launches and shirting... basically ive hit the rev limiter quite a few times, at least 1 or 2 times a evening practicing)

And when you hit it, it doesnt seem like it hurts the car, its just like... RPMs are climbing climbing.. BAM say's the car tach ;]

What exactly is it and how does it work?

Thanks =]

Crate

also, hitting it doesnt hurt the car?? thats why the rev limiter is there right!!! =]

tisk tisk tisk....

take it from me bro, i have 2 burnt piston rings and a blown head gasket...the rev limiter is there for a reason, ever hear of valve float? its when a valve is open when its not supposed to be, and BAM your cylinder hits it and you car is now, i am not a rocket scientist but thats not good.
i wouldn't hit the rev limiter, wow you hit it at least twice an evening your nuts bro... you are following in my foot steps...
just be warned... if your car hits the rev limiter, its telling you, easy does it wild horse!!! the Rev limiter shuts off the flow of gas because the engines valve train can't withstand the speed... and the rev limited allows the car not to rise too high in the RPM that will damage it.

its not there, for nothing....

becareful bro, or you gonna end up with !imagepree mucho problems!!

Peace,
Jose

If you had a revlimiter that cut spark i wouldnt worry about it, but since its cutting fuel there is still a chance for left over fuel to ignite in a lean condition. That is deffinetly not good at high rpms. Get a msd 6al.

thanks for the comments.. I shall not be doggin it for a while then =]

Ya, ive been taking it easy for like 2 or 3 months (having the car that long) and last couple weeks.

So w/out a aftermarket ignition system, the Rev limiter is Fuel Cutoff?

And the MSD 6al would fix that (just in case i ever hit it again)

Ya, i KNEW it was bad for the car, but ive been really itching to see what its capabilities are... i shall not take it that far anymore =]....

btw, i have re-grinded cams, i/e, rebuilt head. Shouldnt have hurt it that bad i hope.
