What is this connector?

Hey everyone, I was changing the clutch today on my fiance's 93 SI, and came across this broken connector, but I have no idea what it is, or what it does. It goes into the engine block right underneath the valve cover, and above the transmission bell housing. Here's pics.

Thanks!

i also broke it when i replaced my clutch. its easy to replace. coolant rushes out of the little hole when you remove it, so do it fast so things dont get messy
