My car is almost running perfect after having it almost completely apart for the vtec conversion. The only problem i am having which is wigging me out completely is this very intermittant idle problem. It will just sit there idling perfectly, and then it will all the sudden idle up to like 1300, then drop to 1000; and it will do that for about 30 seconds going back and forth until it finally stops and goes back to idling fine again. I have no idea what this could be at this point, but i am hoping one of you guys could help me out.
Thanks,
Steven
yeah alot of us have this same problem here, we have been trying to narrow it down, some say it's a coolant problem, or a egr problem, I'm still trying to figure mine out as well, I am scanning my trouble shooting section in my helms to try to find the real answer.

i had a similar problem and all it required to fix it was replacing all existing gaskets that I had taking apart in my work. You should never reuse a gasket, especially paper ones.
when i unplugged my EGR valve to do the idle adjust, it jumped up and down for a little while like decribed above then returned to normal, but it threw a CEL
Code 12 right? Yeah I get that code once in a while, I've taken off my egr and cleaned the crap out of it, it looks brand new, but I still get the code once in a while.

i had that too, it would idle from 1 to 2.5, but mine was the idle valve controler, located right under the throttle body. Take out the throttle body, then look at the side of the bottom piece. there are 2 screws u can out. Inside u will find a white plastic thing, with a spring around it. Make sure its screwed in tight. Mine was loose cause my motor mounts were gone, so that ***** was shakin a lot and since that thing is plastic, over time, i might cause it to get loose. but i changed all that and its been runnin perfect. hope this helps

Wow that's the one of the newest suggestions I've heard, I'll try that thanks.

No not yet I've been too busy with work and family. It's hard to know if anything works because I only get this once in a while.
