Weird noise

So i was driving on 95 and I switched on my AC. I had it on for probably 20mins. Then I notice that my engine sounds louder and It sort of feels like there is friction in the engine. I can feel it through the pedal, steering wheel, and shift knob. Well I continue my drive from NJ to RI. It continues for the next 200 miles. I open the hood and check everything and it seems fine. The engine feels like it is under some type of strain and at idle it sounds tired, higher pitched. The sound seems to be coming from the belts. What do you think it is? The alternator going? 114,000 miles.

Can you hear the abnormal noise(not the engine, the belt area noise) at idle? If you can, get a long solid tool like a +1ft socket extension or a breaker bar.. or even a +1ft screwdriver, and do some listening.. place one end of the long tool against each component (alternator, PS pump, various parts of the engine block and head) and put your ear to the other end and listen for the noise you're looking for. Whatever is making the noise will be greatly amplified like that and you can pinpoint the culpret.

Oh hey, I just remembered, if you're not the tool type and don't think you have anything you can use to listen to the engine.. do you have your OEM jack?.. you can use the tool that hooks onto the jack, that would work

Well I brought it into the shop and they came up with this: need to replace the crank pulley and sprocket for timing belt. $455.00 This sucks..... I remember a year ago the crank pulley came loose and all my belts broke. What is wrong with this engine. Anyone have these problems ever?

That's not a normal replacement, aside from the belt those parts should never need to be replaced. So something's wrong/loose. I'd bet it was probably your crank pulley bolt, that it was loose, and allowed the pulley and timing belt gear to move in and out, causing damage to the timing belt. But be sure you're not being screwed out of money for the pulley and gear..... it takes a lot to have to replace those, ask them why they're replacing them, and unless they say/show you the woodruff keyway is messed up they're probably bull****ting you.
