No, 92 Si's, and 93 vtecs came with leather, it was available from the start. I have 93 leather in mine, and I have a friend who has a 92 Si, who also has leather, came stock. The style is different in the leather from 92/93-94/5/6 though. The 94+ leather had all the little holes in it, dunno what you'd call it. And the 92/93 was 'krinkle' leather, it was vainy (I guess that's how you'd describe it).
The reason most Vtecs have leather is that the people who bought them new, almost always ordered the option. But I believe at some point it because standard (maybe 94+).
-leather was NOT a FACTORY option in 93. If you have leather in your 93 VTEC, then it is not leather from the Honda Factory in Japan, it is probably a leather option from the local dealer. How do I know this? Because my bro had a 93 VTEC and at the time of purchase, cloth was the standard offering, and I also have a US brochure for the 93 Preludes. For 1993 cloth was the only available interior for VTEC's (and all other trims for that matter). So, just because you bought your 93 VTEC brand new from the dealer and it had leather in it already, doesn't necessarily mean that it was leather that Honda put in when the car was built in Japan. Dealers are great at putting in "non-factory" stuff while the car is still new and selling the car with it. Good examples are things like aftermarket wheels. And if you bought your 93 VTEC used, then there' s no telling what previous owner(s) may have added or changed.
-In 1994, Honda Factory leather (the perforated style) was standard, it was NOT and OPTION, meaning, you did not get to pick whether you wanted cloth or leather, it came from the factory WITH leather already. How do I know this? Because I have an original 1994 VTEC model, and I also have the accompanying US brochure for the 1994 prelude.
Now, of course, I'm in california, and I'm assuming that the rest of the US gets the same offerings from Honda (this is typically the case) as in California. And also of course, car manufacturers have been known to make "mid-model-year" changes, which will not be reflected in original first run brochures. Acura did this with their CL's when in the middle of model year 2001, they introduced a new metallic blue color which was not offered when the the model year 2001's were first introduced. The only exception to all of this is the introduction of the VTEC model in 93, the VTEC model definitely was not introduced until 93.
I disagree, unless.. that is that EVERY Honda dealership used the exact same aftermarket leather to install into the 92-93 cars. Because every one I've seen, all the leather is the same, so unless the entire world used the exact same aftermarket company to install into the 92-93 ludes, you're wrong. And both 92 and 93 had the option for leather, as I've seen many of both with them, and again, the same style.
Well, from what I can recall, there weren't too many companies that made these "aftermarket leather kits" for cars, at least not during that time. Katzkinz being one of the major ones, made many kits for honda/acura back in the early 90's (and the still do). It is not unlikely that many dealers contracted with them to provide dealer installed leather as an option, in much the same way that dealers can install your car with something such as lojack, where the particular product is offered by only one or very few manufacturers.
On the other hand, what your saying contradicts the hard evidence I have in my hand (US market brochures). Because these brochures do not indicate leather as an option and in fact, indicate that only cloth is the standard offering. Of course, I reserve my second statement that mid-model year changes are not impossible.
But again, just because you picked the car up brand new from the dealership with leather in it, doesn't necessarily mean that that was Honda leather, installed at the factory in Japan.
Still, I'd be interested to see pics of the 94 leather, because I've never seen it before. And I do know what the katskinz leather kits look like.
Here is a pic of the leather that came with my 92 Si:
My car was originally purchased from a dealer located in Hawaii. I know that 4bidden's 92 Si also has the exact same style leather as mine, but I don't know where his was originally purchased (but probably not Hawaii). Maybe he can chime in and let us know.
Just for curiousity sakes, I would like to know if the leather was from Honda or not.
And yes, I've seen that leather kit many times before too. I remember seeing it in several pre-94 preludes when they were brand new sitting in the dealership lots during those years.
I want to say it looks likes the Katzkin kit simply because it does look exactly like the Katzkin kit. In fact, I'm pretty sure its the katzkin kit. If it is not in the brochures as a "factory" option, but was offered as an option for the dealership, then it must have been something that American dealers decided to offer as an option. Just like aftermarket rims, it is very common for US dealers to offer, as a dealer option, brand name aftermarket rims on the cars. Or even lo-jack. You won't find this in the manufacturer's brochure because its not a factory option (meaning, they don't install it at the factory), but its often offered by the dealer as a dealer option and the dealer puts it in.
do all of the leather ones come with heated seats...or is that more dollas?
i have a little plug on the side of my seat on the driver's side that is not connected to anything...i'm thinkin it has to be for leather heated seats??? anyone?
