VTEC only works 80% of the time

I deliver pizzas and am in my car a good amount of time during the day. When I punch it I've noticed that every now and again VTEC doesn't want to engage. This usually happens after driving for 20 minutes or so. VTEC always seems to work right after starting up. So yeah it only seems to be working for 80% of the time.

I make sure my oil is always at the proper level. I even took off the VTEC solenoid and cleaned it out. It was a little dirty but I am still having the issue afterwords. Any ideas? How can I trouble shoot this thing? Thanks

maybe it's a loose connection on the solenoid?

there is only one simple solution - add more vtec fluid

I mean once the car has warmed up I usually don't experience the problem. Only after driving for a good 20 minutes.

Wires seemed okay when I removed everything to clean it out. No codes either. I bought a new gasket for, I'm about to put it in so I'll double check everything.

Also, I have a question... How exactly would I know if the V-Tec is activated? And around what RPM would it activate at? I drive a 96 Prelude Si H22A.

If you can't tell when it's kicking in, it's not kicking in....

well, I am glad you asked...

it's a universal muffler with one small inlet and one small outlet - it looks like a cheap replacement muffler to me and it's very restrictive. The result - I have tons of low end power , but the top end isnt as fun

Kinda glad you brought up mufflers, Mooney. I was just wondering if you had any suggestions on what kind I should put on my 'Lude? (Anyone can answer this actually) I would like a performance exhaust, but not one that makes me sound like a Civic. (My last car had an Apexi exhaust with no catalytic converter) So something thats close to quiet but gives top end that little extra oomph.
