VTEC not kicking in on a cold engine...

I noticed that when my engine is cold (heat guage on dash isn't to normal temp) my VTEC isn't kicking in at 5 grand. Is this normal? Or is VTEC supposed to work all the time?

VTEC will not engage if the coolant is below operating temperature. It is one of the varibles the ECU uses to decide when to engage VTEC.

Its a safety measurement, you don't want to run your engine into vtec while its cold...

You really should run any engine hard when cold, this just is a little reminder to you that says "I don't like to be blown up"

No it's not. 4th gen VTEC is 5000

And dude lurch if you're trying to hit VTEC on a cold engine...learn to take care of it or sell it. Maybe try reading to owners manual.

Some idiot that I know said that it's good to hit high RPM's on a cold engine. I think he must be some kind of idiot.

NEVER do that on a engine with vtec, or for that matter ANY car. The engine has to warm up, until your temp meter hits the middle (normal temp) shift at 3500. You'll bend valves, and most likely hit the rev limiter a lot sooner (6000)

what about when racing at the strip? arent u spupposed to run your engine cold if u dont have VTEC? this is what i have been doing in my Si the past 35 passes down the strip. i usually wait until the temperature is one bar below the middle of the temperature guage. How bad is this for my H23?

thanks,
tim

thats different because your engine has been run recently, i try and let my motor cool down before my next pass also... But really drag racing in general isnt good for your car so I doubt its any more detrimental to let the motor cool down a little.

Besides the fact the you shouldn't you be running the car hard before it's fully warm VTEC works on oil pressure. If VTEC is not kicking in when cold then that is perfectly normal.

i learned the scary way that when the motor is cold the rev limit is dropped to 6000...i didnt know what happened and i got scared and went home...luckily that night someone else posted up a question about that and i was at ease...but i will NEVER drive hard on my car when its not warmed up anymore and i hope you dont either

i guess you can think of it as if your foot has fallan asleep you wouldnt just get up and run as fast as u can, u have to give it some time to heal before u hit vtec
