Vtec Gauge Swap

How many peps think it is neccessary here on po.com to put a vtec gauge cluster into their h23 si car to a h22 engine. I do not know if it will bother me to see my tach on my si cluster go into redline whereas the vtec redlines at 7400rpm the si and cluster redline at 6500 rpm .... what do you all think ? thanks

Well... Take a look at my sig. I didn't like the idea of revving into the redline as well so I did that custom to my Si gauges.

It is fairly difficult to do as you need to rip apart you cluster and scratch off the overlay but I like the result.

In response to your question, yes, I think that the clusters should be swapped when doing this, it makes driving much easier.

I personally think its worth it if your doing the 94-96 electro-gauges. The 92-93 analog cluster imo sucks compared the the 94-96 cluster. U can find the cluster at the junk yard for about $100 bux maybe even cheaper on ebay. The wiring is not that bad, the instructions are in the FAQ section so its fairly a simple mod. And the results are well worth it imo.

I still have my Si gauge with my VTEC engine and it doesn't bother me at all, I kinda like going 1K RPM into the red line Though if I could fine a SR-V EL gauge for a good price I would probably swap it

Well it is not extremely simple to do but not bad either. First you need to get the cluster out of the car (duh!)

Then just open it up and remove the overlay. Once you have it out just take an xacto knife and CAREFULLY scratch away the areas you want. You will need to do this on the front and back. Then just get some blue film to put behind the overlay to make the new clear spot glow blue and you should be set.

This is a very rough rundown as I don't have the time or energy to do a full writeup and honestly, if you can;t figure it out with that you probably shouldn't attempt it to begin with.

That's what I said, if I could find a SR-V EL gauge for a good price I would probably swap it but I never saw one for sale anywhere not that I have looked that much though.

i am going with a vacf 2 so I will set it in the rpm tach mode and hope that works -- I have tried to remove the guage cluster before and unless I know exactly how it comes apart and goes back together I am not touching it ... did you have to snap the cluster apart once it was out of the car or did it unscrew to get to the underlay--- I assume that you removed the needles and such

Its not that hard, taking out the cluster is simple. There's a FAQ on how to do it in the FAQ section. Jus remove all the screws that hold the black plastic trim above the cluster. There like 8 or so. Remove the tweeter covers, then there's a plastic rubber trim on the bottom of the cluster, take that off (should be double sided tape on the back side of it) then there is this lil divder peice that seperated the cluster from the clock/temp side. I believe 1 screw holds that in, remove it, there should be like 4 screws that hold the cluster in, take those out, remove the cluster, unplug all the harnesses. Then look up on the faq to see which wire connects to what (basically tap the same wires from the new cluster to ur harness, except the bottom lower left) and turn on the car to ignition and see if it works. After that put it all back together.

I enjoy having other people in the car wondering what's goin on when i rev out to the end of the guage

I would just throw in an aftermarket tach; the stock Si guage is just as accurate as the VTEC gauge, it just has the redline that starts earlier. I don't think it's worth all the effort just to move the redline's mark.....
