Thanks. OK, now this question- I only drove the car about 15 miles just to get home after it started making that rattling noise and haven't driven it since. Should the crank be OK? And do I have to take it to a machine shop? Because me and my BF do all the work on our cars, including replacing these bearings. Thanks again!

Wow, she drives a Lude and she does her own work. Can't ask for too much more huh? LOL My girlfriend loves her 4th gen but she won't touch it... nooooooooooo, that's MY job.

Anyway... 15 miles huh? Er... I hate to say it, but that's an awefully damn long way. I limped mine maybe 5-7 and it was a goner.

Now, don't take this as an absolute... there are many variables, and nothing is ever certain. I WOULD however, take the crank completely out and mic it. Take it to a machine shop if you have to and see if it can be salvaged. Wish you had an H23, cause I have a complete block sitting in my basement. I still don't know exactly what I'm going to do with it yet, but I'm sure I'll come up with something.

Do you know which rod bearing it is? (I'm assuming it's a rod bearing) You might have to buy a new rod for that one too. I always hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if the crank is funky, then you're going to need a new rod more than likely too. (Almost a certainty I think)

Anyway, it'll be easy to tell which one it is once the oil pan is off and the crap is out of the way. It'll be the rod that wiggles on the crank.

I'm not a Prelude mastermind, but I've had my fair share of issues that I've had to work with. In fact, I have my head laying on the work bench right now. It's all chewed up, and so are my nice, shiny 13:1 CR pistons. I'm playing with what I have right now... and it looks like it's time for some new toys!

Anyway, if you have any questions, you can post here or email me. Shgg20@aol.com
(Shamless plug) also, you can find me on Honda-tech almost all day. I'm the Prelude forum mod. I'll answer what I can.

Yeah, I have everything off except the crank. It was the bearing under piston #4. We got #1 off, too, and it was fine. #4 was shot. Haven't gotten off 2 & 3 yet. How expensive do you think it'll be? Do I just take in the crank and say What's wrong? Thank you soooo much for helping me!!

Well, if I'm not mistaken (and someone else can probably back me up on this or disprove it) the Helms should give you specific clearences. Take the crank out and measure it, then take it to a machine shop and see if they can stay withing those clearences. IF you can do that, then you're set.

#4, I think that's the one that went on mine too... blegh... sorry ass bearings.

Good luck!

preludechic: Just to let you know I did the same thing and here was the damage:

Crankshaft toast
Connecting Rod Toast,
Piston Marked up
Block marked up.

ALL of the damage was done on piston #2.

Good luck with yours, my baby is still in the shop

That sucks. I'm just going to get the bearings in, and if it still runs ****ty, I'll sell it for really cheap.

I wouldn't do that. Just find someone with a stock rod, and a stock crank, and replace them. No biggie. Also, DO have the crank checked out by a machine shop. You'll save yourself a lot of headaches. It may run fine off the top, but it may not run fine in $5,000 miles.

Dude, if you scarred up the cylinder wall, you did more than spin a bearing. LOL With a spun bearing the damage *should* be localized to the crank and rod only. Unless you drive for a while and throw the rod. Like I said, with cars and motors there are no absolutes. There is an exception to almost every rule.

Look, just take your time, calm down, and go at this logically. It's easy to jump the gun. I'm sure I can help you find some stock parts if you need them. K?
