Vehicle speed sensor or Wheel Speed Sensor problem

Hi

I am getting an intermittant problem where the speedo will jump about all over the place and feels like its loosing power for a second or two with the engine light on. Also on occasions the 4WS light will come on, usually fixed by switching engine off and back on again and sometimes the VTEC will not kick in.

Its showing fault code 17 which iv'e looked up in the helms which says about Intermittant failure and says to check the wiring which seems fine from what i can see. also it says to test by driving in 2nd gear upto 4000rpm and letting it drop to 1500rpm which i have tried repeatedly but can't get the fault to show again.

Is this a bad vehicle speed sensor or wheel speed sensor?

Thanks.

Looking at this previous post i did i am thinking the two problems could be related.

twitchy steering 4WS light on

Merlinbadman shows that fault code 17 is sub steering angle sensor but helms says its the vehicle speed sensor??

What's showing code 17, the CEL or the 4WS light?

CEL code 17 is the VSS, but 4WS code 17 is the rear sub-angle sensor...

I would think you either have a bad VSS, or a loose wire in that circuit. The 4WS system takes a reading off the VSS to determine how fast to steer the rear wheels, so that's probably why you're getting that light also.

VTEC engagement also depends on a signal from the VSS.

Its the CEL which is giving the code 17. I didn't realize the 4WS light flashed to give a code. The 4WS light just flashes continuously when i jump the plug. Is this normal?

Should i just replace the top part of the sensor, which i think most people do to solve these problems, or the whole unit?

Thanks.

Yeah I believe that's normal while jumping the service connector, although I don't own a 4WS.

Not really sure to tell you the truth. I would just get a new oem VSS from Honda (whatever it comes with).

Maybe someone else can chime in about that.
