Valves, Valve Springs, Retainers, and Port and Polish.....more

Ok guys,
I need a little help here....
I just did a JDM H22 swap, I put Type S cams, Skunk 2 cam gears, Exedy clutch, Fidanza Flywheel, and replaced many factory things.
I started it up...and it is expelling white smoke from the head. Which means mostlikly that it has a blown head gasket. I called the place I bought it from and they will do jack about it. I also have to buy headers cause the ones I have aren't compatible. So I have 3 options.

1. Sell the car and cut my losses now.
2. Replace the head gasket for $400 more dollars.
3. Port and Polish from PYR for $600.(I am friends with Peter thats why it is so cheap. It should be 1200)

The port and polish they have to replace the head gasket anyways. Plus it makes great power. If I get the Port and polish should I get valves, valve springs, and retainers? What kind are good? I don't want Crower. I know Jun and Spoon are good but they are like 600 for the whole kit (springs and retainers). Skunk 2 is crap. I am thinkin maybe Ferrea. They are the only other kind that seem ok.
I may just go with PYR stuff. Peter will give me them for 350 for springs and retainers.
What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Josh

Re: Valves, Valve Springs, Retainers, and Port and Polish.....more

I'd go for the P&P, if you trust the guy to do a proper job.

Valves I wouldn't worry about too much - just let him do the valve job. Valve springs and retainers I'd upgrade right now since you'll probably continue to mod and raise the rev limiter sooner or later. Honestly I don't see anything wrong with Crower, but I wouldn't pay for JUN(k) or Spoon since you're just shelling out for the brand name. That Peter guy better be sure his springs and retainers are better than OEM Honda ones though... Honda makes really high quality stuff.

they only thing i can really suggest is to spread the word that the place that did this would not back up their work. that should put a damper on things

Hey,
Peter definatly knows how to do great port and polishes! My friend has one on his LS/vtec civic with only valve springs, and retainers. He could beat my h23 with out shifting from second gear, meanwhile I was in 4th. It is a really good port and polish I watched him port and polish a civic type R intake manifold yesturday. My friend also has Peters valve springs and retainers. They are good till 10,000 RPM. my friend takes them to 9,000 all the time.
The shop was Go motors, the engine looked in awsome shape when I got it...but it concealed a blown head gasket Oh well...

2nd gear vs 4th? Of course he accelerates harder in second than you can in 4th...

It was at a stop sign, I shifted through the gears. He shifted from first to second. His redline is like 10000. I just stopped when I shifted into forth cause he was 1 car at least ahead of me, and pullin away very fast.
