I'm probably going to track my 93 SI once or twice this year (hopefully at NPM for starters ) and need to upgrade the brakes.
1st Choice: Simplest thing is to replace the OEM size rotors and pads. Thinking of either Brembo blanks or the Rotora slotted through the awesome NPM GB and get the AXXIS pads.
2nd Choice: Upgrade to VTEC calipers, then get the rotors and pads replaced to match like above. The problem with this option is I worry about the condition of used VTEC brakes. Do people always rebuild them or not? Is a rebuild difficult - I searched and from what I saw it didn't look too bad but they didn't go into detail about it and I'd like to keep this upgrade relatively simple. Anyone done this swap and not found much of an improvement??
Any suggestions on brembo vs. rotora would also be appreciated. And I'm not doing the legend or nsx swap so lets not worry abou that.
I would recommend upgrading since you are replacing most of the parts anyways. I ended up getting a set of front calipers off someone with a leftover JDM front clip. I got them for like $45 +ship. The rebuild is very easy, just pull them apart and replace all the seals. It is very hard to abuse the calipers as the only thing they do is squeeze the rotor.
As for the braking improvment, I can't really say. When I upgraded the calipers I put some brembo blanks on there with Hawk HPS's. They will not fade and it stops really fast now compared to my Si setup. Just so you know you will NOT have to upgrade the master cylinder as they are the same between Si and VTEC.
If you are worried about rebuilding the calipers, you caould always just purchuse a remanufactured set from the autoparts store, then trade in you Si calipers for the core refund. I doubt most parts store employees would notice a difference between the two.

Anyone have Rotora here?
If you're going to start tracking/HPDE your car, there is no reason to get slotted/cross-drilled/etc. other than for looks.....the rotor is a disposable part just like a brake pad so the brembo blanks, autozone rotors, etc. will all be fine...I also noticed that you were thinking of axis mm pads for track - I don't recommend them - you might like something like a Hawk HP Plus quite a bit more...

About the rotors... I know that the slots aren't really important but I've been hearing too many stories about brembos warping lately so I'd be interested in whether people have had the same problem with rotora.
As for the pads, they'd be the Ultimates, not MM, but I have heard many good things about Hawks. Its just that there a lot of nice GB's on axxis right now. I'll have to do more research, pricing.

Do you have to return the same model? I still have my Si calipers from my Legend caliper swap. I asked the guy at the store if they needed to be the same model and he said he didn't knew, he told me to bring them and they'll see what they can do then. Just haven't got time to do it yet...

They should be the same caliper to turn them in. But who knows if the parts store could tell the difference.
And BTW VTEC calipers run $57 at NAPA

Technically, I guess they should be the exact same model. However, I doubt most parts store employees will be able to discern a difference visually. I guess they could check the part numbers stamped on the calipers. . .but I don't see many people taking the time/effort to do that. I bet you could even buy the Legend calipers and return the Prelude ones without any hassle. You just put them back in the boxes, and hand your reciept to the clerk.
When you think about it, the company remanufacturing the units might not really care if you turned in a pair of Si calipers. It's not like the VTEC units are drasticly more expensive or valuable, they probably make the same amount of profit from a pair of Si's or VTEC's.
Usually there is no way to tell (from a parts store prespective) other than finding another set to compare them or finding a picture to compare to. So it would probably pretty easy to return them.
The manufacturer will care though and send them back when they discover they aren't the right calipers for the box since each part number requires different parts to rebuild them. More than likely the parts store will get them back. None of that matters too you though.
