Type S intake installed, butt dyno very happy

Well, i got my Type S intake yesterday from JHPUSA.com (great service, i buy lots from them) I took off the AEM intake and put on the new one without much trouble at all. I took it for a spin and found a few things I like. One, it is quieter, no more howl/growl (yea, i know you riceboys like this, but i dont). Two, my butt dyno says it feels like I have a little more torque down low (I will dyno compare on my first chance). And thirdly, I have a Skunk2 Intake Manifold which makes that annoying whistle sound when you step on the gas, and miraculously the type S intake has gotten rid of the whistle!! I also think aeshetically it looks much cleaner and more fit than an AEM intake.

Nice, how much did it cost you?
Did you have to do any modifications?
Also do you have the resenator box on?

I want to do this pretty soon as well.

I bought it for $149
I only had to move the external coil over slightly
No, I only have the lower part of the box on, just goes to open air below the engine bay.

my guess is it's quieter b/c it's restricted more.... also, being more restricted, you will probably notice a little more torque down low. just my guess.

For the most part but I'm not surprised if he feels something. I just converted my iceman from a CAI to a SR w/cold air box and I can definitely tell a difference. My low end is worse and I can tell you how I know. Before with the CAI I would pull away from stop signs in 2nd gear with no problem. Now that I've switched it bogs a little when I try to do the same thing. Top end is a little better, as it should be, and I don't have the typical H23-fall-on its-face-above-5500rpm problem like before. Pulls hard almost to redline now. But yes, I'm sure the differences are only in the couple of HP range at different points in the rpm. But it all depends on where you want to make your power.

I agree (to an extent) as far as performance, but i can guarantee you that it got rid of the skunk2 IM whistle, as well as the air charge howl.

Totally disagree, you can tell a big difference when pulling from stoplights.

Does the Type-S intake come with an air filter or do you have to get your own?

haha, I think I'm too embarassed to show it because it is so ghetto I just grabbed some scrap foam board from home depot, painted it black, cut it to size and placed it on top of the filter between the fender and battery. I'm still trying to figure out how best to get air flow to it. I bought a couple pieces of 1" hose and currently have them going from just under the splash guard up through hole that is under the filter but I'm not sure it is going to hold for long. You can also just squeeze some 3/8 inch fuel hose into the front nostril on the lude and wind it in front of the battery to the homemade box. Still experimenting I'll try to grab a pic this weekend or something

No it doesn't. The bottom half of the filter box is identical to the USDM bottom half. In fact, I just re-used the bottom of my stock intake because I didn't feel like wasting my time to replace it with an identical part. It uses a standard stock filter, or k&n drop-in replacement.

OK, here's my temporary ghetto SRI w/cold air box. If I like how it performs at my next track day and around town a little more I'll probably come up with something a little more permanent and sexy looking.

Basically I just went to home depot and found some busted up scrap foam board = free Then I painted it flat black, cut it to form and just wedged it into place. My battery stand happens to have a nice hole in it right over where the board fits into place so I just grabbed a screw and a wingnut and used this hole to mount the board and make it stable. You can see the nut in the front right part of the board:

I think I'll cut the back of it more flush with the back of battery next. I also wedged a small piece of foam to fit vertically between the filter and battery, forming the "back" of the box. It's just wedged into place. Also, don't mind my dirty battery I had a coolant leak a month ago and it sprayed everywhere.

Getting airflow. I've used a couple different techniques to get cold air in. First I found that a 3/8" hose can just fit in the front nostril and can be threaded between the headlights and the battery to the box. It only shows one hose here but I managed to wedge in a second.

Next, I grabbed a couple pieces of 1" hosing and wedged them in between the splash guards so they were facing forward and ziptied them there. Then I brought them through where the resonator used to be up to the opening under the box. (in red, the hose from the nostril is in blue). I forgot to take a pic of them under the car though. As you can see I like zipties!!

Pretty basic for now but it's holding together. If I make this permanent I'll probably get some sturdier hosing to go from a properly cut hole in the splash guard and mount it better under the filter.

Oh, and I checked my plugs for fun today. Not bad after 15K hard miles

You expect to get airflow through that tiny hose?

oh, air flows very easily through a tube. I can blow lightly on one end and feel it quite well on the other. I'm not trying to flood the box with new air or go for a ram air effect, just give it a supply of fresh air.

^^^ hey what kind of SRI do you have? it seems like the diameter gets larger as it gets closer to the air filter.
