Turbo H22 stock vs. N/A H23 blue top?

I have a brand new ct 26 supra turbo an intercooler some 550cc precision injectors and hondata s300.

I can turbo a stock block h22 or go with the h23 blue top.

I've heard some pretty nasty things about stock h22 internals and boost, but Im also a big believer that its all in the tune also.

I'd like to hear from some been there done that guys but all opinions are welcome

I can get a h23 blue top for $1800.

I can get a H22 for $1000 then all I need is piping, bov, wastgate and manifold which will put me real close to what a H23 costs.

This will be my daily driver. I'll be running a wideband/street tune.

A stock H22 on boost being used as a daily driver probably wont be very reliable at all, the rods and cylinder walls are weak. The H23a is a nice choice and you'll get mad props from just about any honda owner just for doing such an uncommon swap, I'd go with the H23a. Oh and I was just on hmotorsonline just the other day and they had the H23a vtec for $1400.

If you're keeping stock internals, from what I've read, the H23 is a better choice.

At the same rate, low boost is your friend, cause stock internals, no matter what don't seem like a good idea above 5 - 7 lbs of boost... if that.

I plan on doing a FI build and have been doing a lot of research recently, and that's just what I've seen.

Thanks, JDM engine corp is right down the street.
I'm going to see if I can use the price hmotorsonline to barter a way better deal.If not hmotorsonline will be the route I'll take.

I'm going to be looking for a blown h22 for cheap to rebuild for turbo, but if the dohc h23 lets loose before I get one built it will defiantly be a blue top.

1) The H22 Rods and Cylinder Walls are not weak.

2) A boosted stock block can be reliable, but yes, it is all in the tune -- and in the amount of psi you run.

I believe my friend was running up to 9psi on his completely stock block. And ran this way for quite a while.. I'll see if I can find out more later tonight

You'll need to decide on what you want to do..
If you already have a H23, might as well build that with a H22 Cylinder Head if you want that. It'll be the same thing as the H23A VTEC.

Only reason the H23A1 non-VTEC is more boost friendly is because of lower compression than the H22.

Are you planning on getting a JDM H22? You do know that it has higher compression than a stock USDM H22, correct?

And I'm going to assume the "sohc h23" you mentioned is a typo......

yea the sohc was a typo. There's a H22 head on craigslist that Im going to pick up.I'm pretty new to the H series but if I rebuilt my H23 with H22 rods and piston and an h22 head wouldn't I have an h22?

Im on a budget I don't want to get over 2k in the motor. Machine shop would be the only labor charge.

I really don't want to sleeve a motor $$$$ ,but I'm not against block-guards.
What kind of reliable hp can you get out of a non sleeved h23a vtec turbo with a blockguard good pistons and rods and of corse a little lower compression ?

Ive never had a h series apart Im assuming they have block guards for them.

Block Guards are available for OBD2 Blocks.

The H23A1 and H22A1 are closed deck.

You can not run forged pistons in the H-Series, so you're limited on lowering compression.
Which, you wouldn't want to use the H22 Rods/Pistons I wouldn't think then...

You can make 300whp on a stock-like block, but reliable, I dunno.. It'll depend on the PSI.
