Trunk spare tirewell dimensions?

Does anyone have the dimensions for the spare tirewell so I can build a box to put a sub in there? I am considering using fiberglass, but have never messed with the stuff.

I know Mark94 has a nice setup, and hopefully you can help me out.

I know I sound lazy, but my car is in the shop

you can't just build a box and slap it in there. There is a big metal stud right in the center the sticks up about 3 inches...used to hold down the spare tire. you'll need to get that cut off.

as for size..well it's exactly the same width/diameter/height as a 17 in rim w/ 215/40 series tires mounted on it.

By the way go fiberglass..do a search in the audio section on fiberglass boxes and you'll find a link on how to build one. Pretty easy if you ask me

Thanks man. I already chopped the stud off.

I plan on learning more about fiberglass, but just wondered about this. Doesn't look too difficult. I'll find a practice car to build one in.

jp, my enclosure is made from birch wood (strong and lightweight).

I didn't have any experience with fiberglass so I used the experience I had to make my box.

I don't know the exact dimensions of my box as I did it over a year ago. I think it was 15" X 21" and 5" high. Don't hold me to that but those are the numbers that are ringing a bell. I think the box has about .91 cubic feet of space on the inside.

I didn't need to cut the center "knob" off because the well is somewhat curved and the center of my box rests on the knob, while the ends of the box sit on the curved section of the wells. It is a perfect fit and does not wiggle from side to side. It is perfectly stationery. I also lined the bottom of the well with a thick bath towel and some bubble wrap (that's right, just like what you use to wrap things for shipping). This stops any wood on metal sounds that may result from hitting a bump.

After the box was completed, I made the top section and cut out the opening for the box to show through. I cut the opening and inch smaller on each side so that when the top section is placed on top of the box it holds it in very firmly. I also made the top section very tight fitting (against the rear seats, fender liners, and rear of the trunk) so that it would have no movement during cornering or unexpected bumps. This tight fit also ensures that the box stays stationery as well.

I made a pattern out of cardboard for the upper section to ensure a tight fit. Just take your time, it's well worth it.

Sorry, I don't have any pics and the car is in storage now so I can't get any anytime soon.

Hope that helps.

Mark
