1992 Prelude Si.
I have had trouble getting my trip odometer to reset a few times, the plunger just wouldn't plunge. Each time it finally did and all was fine, not yesterday. It wouldn't reset and I apparently pushed too hard this time cause when it did depress it went from 296 to 196 with the 1 not quite lined up and it is not registering mileage anymore.
Anybody got any experience with dismantling and repairing this problem? Should I be able to?
Originally posted by HI HO Ok, I've got the cluster on my desk, got the clearface off. How do I get the gauge face off?
There are four screws down by the needles that you have to remove. Then it just works out. It might be stuck a little to the plastic back piece. Just peel it off and lift at the top of the gauge face. Then pull out.
I see what is happening but I do not understand why. Each number wheel has a high lift cam on its hub. Pushing the reset plunger rotates an arm into contact with the cam forcing the cam/number wheel back to zero.
If any number wheel is at 5 or higher it resists reset. If all are under 5 it resets just fine. 5 on the wheel has the peak of the cam in contact with the reset arm. When resetting, the number wheel rotates whichever direction is closer to zero.
I gave up. It is not jammed now and is functioning. I know not to force it and if it resists resetting, drive a bit and try again, worst case; just wait for the numbers to be less than 5.
I couldn't see anything wrong or any way to make it function better.
No oil, wheels turned quite freely both directions. Thought about it and decided against it, might have to give it a try if resetting becomes too much of a problem.
Since I last posted, I was able to get mine to reset, but once again it is stuck. Before it was stuck at a higher number, but now like you mine is on 000. Its been like this now for weeks. If i dont have music on the clicking drives me crazy.
