Transmission Problems!

1992 Honda Prelude Si
Automatic Transmission

When I start out driving, everything is perfectly ok. About 500 feet down the road I'll start to have problems. My car will not accelerate, and the rpm just drops. I can get it moving again, but that requires either punching the gas hard or letting off and pressing it again - in either case the problem is only remedied for a few seconds. I have yet to take it anywhere because if it is the transmission I don't plan on fixing it.

I tried replacing the TCU but it didn't fix anything, and I haven't yet tested for transmission error codes on the D4 light.

Other symptoms:
-If the D4 light is flashing the car will not start.
-Sometimes when shifting into park, neutral, etc., I hear a loud thud coming from the back of the car.
-Even though the car works fine when first started, turning it off and back on again will not fix the problem.

If anyone has any insights on my problem help would be much appreciated.

On a side note, my car burns EXCESSIVE amounts of oil. 70 miles on the highway will burn 5 quarts, and its all coming out my exhaust. I do have an oil leak but most of it gets burnt, I know this just from looking at the back of my car after a long trip (and my girlfriends windshield after driving behind me the other day). O2 sensor is bad and I have no catalytic converter, which might be the problem but I don't know much about cars so I'm not sure.

Thanks!

If the d4 light flashes it is not always a trans problem as i just recently fixed a temp sensor on my 92Si auto that caused a d4 flash and a verry hard start. Burning 5qrt's in 70 miles is a serious problem and is probably not fixable without a engine rebuild, so a engine swap is needed first off. Look in craigslist for a used h23 around here in va beach i can get one for 3-400 dollars. I have had mine for 12 years 13 in october and 260,000 miles later i still have a smooth shifting trans. If your engine problem is any sign of how you have treated the car i would say the trans is probably on its way out the door also.

get an h22 and a 5 speed. or a new h23. 5 quarts in 70 miles means that engines pretty much toast and it would be cheaper to get a used one. how was this car driven? hmotorsonline.com has good prices on lightly used units

Sorry for the delay, times have been hectic lately. I've only had this car 2 1/2 years, and most if the problems were there when I got it. If I had known about any of them I never would have bought it, the dealer of course didn't tell me because he wanted to make a sale. Typically I drive this thing under the speed limit because of it's issues (pissing off everyone behind me), now with the acceleration problems I don't really have a choice not too, speeding up from a dead stop takes some time. I don't really have slot of money to put into this thing, so unless the fix ends up being something cheap I'm trading it in. Now that it hasn't been raining everyday I might try to see what that indicator light tells me tonight.

Pull the plug wires one at a time and check for oil. If you truly are burning 5qt in that short of a trip this is all pointless, that much in such a short perion is not a leak its a hemorrhage. This is going to take money to fix so if you have another option for a diffrent vehicle i would go with that.
