transmission or oil pan leak

I was changing my oil about 2 days ago and when i was under the car i noticed that under the trans and around the oil pan was a lot of gunk. Looks like my manual trans oil or something. Car has 88,000 miles. You think this is a bad seal or something else. Is this a common problem.

how can you tell? Standard MT oil is just 5 or 10W30. Where specifically has it gathered? My oil gasket is a tad moist around the edges where it meets the pan. Take some break cleaner (wear goggles, it hurts just a little when that stuff sprays in your eyes) and a rag and spray off all the gunk, wipe it off and keep tabs on it, you should be able to find very easily the source of your problem.

is is gunk or is it caked on dirt? i got a hole in my CV boot, and it slung the grease in an arc all around my tranny. if it's thick and seems to be oriented front to back in a pattern, then it's probably a cv shaft.
