transmission meltdown!

ok, i have a 93 prelude with h22a and a m2f4 tranny. it has been hard to put in 1st and reverse since it has gotten cold. my problem started in the morning i tried to put my car in reverse and it would'nt go. i shifted into first and then back to reverse and it went in kinda hard. i begin to back up, push in the clutch, come to a stop, and it felt like it was still in gear, all of a sudden the clutch started smoking so i tried to take it out of gear, and it would'nt come out....i actually had to slam it out of gear. i pull out and it won't fully go into first gear. i have to hold the shifter to stay in first, but no grinding though. it seems first third and fifth gear do this and 2nd 4th reverse seem to be fine. i think the linkage is off . any clue how to check with cables. im not used to a cable shift linkage. thanks for any help and sorry for being so lengthy.

well i figures out the problem. i started at the shifter and worked my way to the tranny and nothing seemed to be wrong. i took off the linkage cables and pushed the lever on the tranny through the gears. it shifted like a dream. so the cable must have stretched cuasing it to be able to pull but not push and bind up. hope this thread helps someone in the future.
ps... also would anyone have the shifter cables laying around and want to sell them?"

I'll probably have cables this summer, but not until May or June.

Hi there, I have similar issues. I remember reading somewhere that if you shift into 3rd gear and try to push this shifter forward and it is moving (mine does) it is the linkage.

Can't confirm whether it is true or not, but the OEM linkage is not cheap, so I am waiting as I have a lot of stuff to fix on my car.

Hope this helps, good luck!

thanks for the help but, i did find that the linkage was bad by removing the linkage from the tranny and moving the shifter lever on the tranny it shifted fine. then moving the linkage cable going back to the shifter and could feel it almost a crushing feeling. BAM solved the problem......got one from an h23 out of a junk yard for 40 bucks. thanks for all the responses. oh and hondatech.com phhhhhhffff..........haha...lol

I was gonna say check your throw out bearing. I was having a simular problem. I would try to put it in 1st and it was pretty hard(same in reverse), and when it did go in gear the clutch would grab and the car would try to roll a little. So i replaced the clutch and found out a tab on my throw out bearing had actually broke off(wierd). But never the less i finished installing it and it shifts like a dream now. Just a little heads up to look out for if the problem comes back. I know you had to slam it out of gear so that could have streched it there. Hope everything works out for you and also may help someone else in need one day.
