Funny mine does that as well. But stops after it has been in and out of 5th a few times. Does it do it after you have been shifting into 5th a couple of times?

Sounds like syncro wear. How many miles on the engine?

no, it doesn't quit unless you let the rpms go down, the motor was a recent total rebuild but the car itself has 230.000miles.

That also happens in my car once in awhile. Its not too bad since i never shift fast or shift with high rpms when going into 5th anyways.

That sound gives me goosebumps so i make sure it doesnt happen.

My 5th gear syncro was replaced under warranty. I believe it's a common problem.

yea the 5th gear syncro is a huuuge problem with the fourth gen ludes

iv heard it has something to do with the shift fork being mismanufactured but that usually would have a recall an i checked with honda and there was no recall so im not completely sure on that

and the majority of people that i have seen replace the syncro had it go bad again pretty quickly

mine does the same thing as well as every other 4th gen prelude iv seen so y there was no recall is beyond me

what iv started to do was actually double clutch 5th gear and it works pretty well otherwise i have to let it drop in rpm

good luck with that hope i helped!

Yeah mine is also a 5th gen (1998 base). Like Skunklude4ws said just let the rpms drop before shifting in order to avoid the grinding.

Gear-speed.com are absolute gurus when it comes to trannies. There's no question that they can do it, and you can be assured that they will do it right. They know more about Honda trannies than any shop I've ever met.
