Tranny Problem - Pops out of 3rd gear

It's a 5sp 95 Prelude. All other gears are fine and it goes into gear OK, just as soon as I pop the clutch, it jumps right out. I have even tried to hold the thing in gear while slowly popping the clutch, but it just grinds when I do that

Some people have said things like syncro-gone, whole tranny is shot ect...

Is this a complete rebuild I'm looking at or something which can be done with the tranny in the car or ???
Thanx in advance

the tranny's gotta come out if it's an internal problem. I highly doubt this is anything other than an internal transmission problem; synchro or shift fork IMO.

LOL What a coincidence. Yesterday I test drove a prelude for a customer who came to the shop I work at who had the same problem for third gear. The 3rd gear synchro assembly is probably worn out - the synchronizer blocking ring and clutching teeth for 3rd gear and possibly the hub sleeve. You can replace those only if you want but I dont think its cost effective. Having a new third gear and every other gear being old can cause problems down the road. Get a quote for the 3rd gear synchro assembly and labor to replace and compare it to the pricing of getting a used, good-condition transaxle - maybe from someone here on PO or a local tuner shop.

3rd gear synchro assembly is probably worn out - synchronizer blocking ring, clutching teeth and the hub sleeve. Probably more cost effective to get a low mileage used one than to buy the assembly and perform the labor on the transaxle.
