too many problems

i have a 93 vtec with 118k miles on it, and it just seems like things keep going wrong. A couple months ago my ABS modulator went and cost me $1400.. then my radiator... $300... then my hydraulic pump solenaid for my clutch... $300 and then my clutch disc for another freakin $600. My dad thinks i should sell my car and cut my losses. I love my car and i woulnd't want to part with it.. anyone think it'll last or i should sell it???

I have the same problem with the ABS, you could have passed on fixing it since it is not a neccesary part, brakes would still function just would lock up if you jump on em. the radiator happened due to the plastics sides that are on them, thats very common for preludes, mine blew up 6mo ago while my wife was driving car. I thought that the Tbelt broke, but the plastic top blew off of it.

clutch is wear and tear so thats something that will go, The only next foreseeable repair would be the Timing belt and water pump replacment.

then you pretty much have done everything that should need to be repaired!

keep the car... if you sell than spending all that cash on repairs only helps who buys the car you should just keep and enjoy a car that will last another 118k

look at it this way... you just fixed the major problems your lude had, so you wont have to deal with the radiator, ABS pump, clutch pump, or clutch disc for a long long time. I say keep it.

I`m in the same position as you are, but my car is not giving me problems like yours. It`s the little things that are starting to annoy me. I`m gonna wait till spring to make a final decision.

Repairs are lots cheaper than car payments. They do seem to occur in clusters though. In the long run, older is cheaper until parts start to get scarce but we should have a long time before that starts to happen.

Keep the car for all the reasons listed above.

Just one question though, why were you interested in my car when you already had a VTEC model? I didn't think you had a car at all when you wanted to come and see mine.

Re: too many problems

How does your car sound with the I/H/E? I`m gonna have the exact same parts as you besides my CAI which is an Iceman. I`m hoping its not obnoxiously loud though.

I'm the only Luder too!! Everyone refers to me as the "Lude man", don't know why, they just do....

I've already surprised a couple of people w/ the new ride, which include 2 5.0s, a Turbo Eclipse, and a '98 V6 Mustang (smoked him).

mcgill, that's so weird... i just got my lude last summer and i've replaced all those parts you mentioned except for the clutch solenoid. some advice would be to avoid taking the car to a mechanic and try to figure out how to fix the stuff yourself. i got a used abs modulator and accumulator on ebay for like 40 bucks, and replaced it in like 2 hrs. the radiator was only $100 and so was the clutch, so you could have saved at least $1000. not only that but you learn a lot about your car too.

Yeah, that's good advice... you can buy a Helm's manual ( I need one sooo bad), which tells you how do to pretty much EVERYTHING.... it's not too expensive either.

Wait a minute, where did this come from? You beat both of those??? I believe the 97 Cobra part, but the 98 Formula Firebird... no way!! He must not have been racing... those have the LS1 which is one of the best (and fastest) production NA V8s... actually, now that I think about, it probably is. I've heard of people hitting high 12's w/ just a lid and a cutout! Are you sure it was a Formula?

My 94 VTEC has 185k miles on it and here's what I've fixed:

2 clutches
radiator
2 timing belts/pumps/related parts
1 transmission
2 CV boots
countless brakes/tires
balancer shaft seal (part of factory recall)

and I ALSO have the ABS problem. I'm not getting it fixed because even if the ABS goes out, you still got brakes, just gotta know when to step and stay on the brakes, and when to pump them like an old car (when the ABS light comes on). I'm keeping mine even though its now all beat up, paint faded, because the motor itself runs great and trust me, there aren't too many old VTEC preludes out there, they just weren't that popular.

I'd like to know how many Preludes (each model) were produced each year during the 4th generation... I think that'd be interesting to know.
