Balance shafts being off a few teeth wouldn't keep it from starting, just make it feel like a washing machine is under the hood. Many things can keep it from starting though, check timing as well as ignition.

I did and have the same car and same problem. did a head gasket and changed the coil, distributor cap and rotor, igniter, main relay and still no spark. I am going to try to test the crank sensor and see if that does the trick. Real common problem is a ground on the thermostat housing. check that. If not, then download the helms manual and try the troubleshooting. that is what I am in the process of doing now. If I get mine running, I will let you know how and maybe you have the same problem.

to BOTH OF YOU having problems HIGHLY its the distributor. something is probably wrong there. check that and check ur sparks plug. must likely check ur distributor

it could be as simple as your bolt on your crank pulley came loose and its just spinning your crank and not your cams/distributor. check the bolt if its loose put your cams and crank at tdc and tighten it while holding the flywheel still so you wont mess up your timing
