Hi
I have had some fun and games getting this timing belt done! I can see why they charge a lot at the garage now.
Basically... changed water pump, timing & balancer belt, tensioners, alternator belt, p/s belt and put the engine back together. When I started the engine it coughed and spluttered and then jumped around like a kangaroo before dying and cutting out.
I knew straight away i had done the timing belt wrong (had reservations about whether I was a tooth out or not). I striped the side back down and re-did the timing belt, jamming the cams in position with a metal ruler of all things (worked great!). I put the engine back together.
The engine started no problems, it was working, no vibrations, just the big exhaust sounds.
I worry that I may have damaged something now as after the engine warmed a couple of minutes I hear a tapping sound from the engine. The problem is I don't know if this sound was there before or not (not had car long or run a lot), or whether I am just trying to find problems cause of initial timing belt installation.
I believe the tapping is normal on some preludes, but what should i check to make sure there is no damage?
Is this just a case of adjusting the valves? What else could cause the tapping? I believe if it were a bent valve it would be popping, is that correct?
Cheers in advance
Chris
