Timing Belt broke on the highway :tears:

Really bad news, my timing belt broke on the highway. Took it to a honda dealership that was closest to where i broke down. Seems that i have a cylinder full of oil, oil all on the outside of the engine, fouled spark plug, bent valves and possibly other damage (damaged pistons). Now I have to figure out what to do with this situation, the estimate i was given was $2600 .

I need recommendations, I dont know what to do. I have a friend that could do it for me possibly, but that wouldnt come with the warrenty that honda would. Also he could maybe get me the oem parts for cheap. What are some other routes I could go that wouldnt cost $2600.

I have an H23.

H22A longblock for $1100 from hmotorsonline! You still have warranty? I guess that wouldn't work, but that would be an awesome time to upgrade. Whenever my stock H22A1 goes out or gets to old I plan to just swap in a new H22A longblock.

you basically have the option of either motor, they're going to cost very similar amounts, it all just depends on the time you want/have to spend on getting this working. you dont even have to buy a new transmission althoug it is not highly recomenddededed

You can still swap out the H23 for the H22A.

same situation that happened to me, just not quite as bad.

i ended up getting the full JDM H22 swap with the tranny for $2000 and did the install myself (with a lot of help from PO members). total including all new belts and fluids, $2200.

Just go with the H22 swap, that still would be cheaper than building the H23 and more power

i dont see how that would be cheaper. Since my friend is doing it and he works for a honda/mazda service station, he will get the valves machined, replace the head gasket and belts and charge me what it costs him to do it, plus a little extra for his service. The honda dealership (without going through my friend) said $2600 in repairs, and that is obviously with markup.

A new engine would cost 2500 + shipping.

You could always get an F22B. They're usually below 1500 shipped.

you said 2500 plus shipping .. so wrong .. theres engine shops all over..

there a place that'll give me a jdm h22a w/ tranny and ecu for 2500 CDN .. and shipping is like 125 ... .. remember, this is CANADIAN .. that means about 2000 for the swap ..

Really, you need an ECU and a longblock, you can use your H23 tranny w/ the H22 and you'll get better gas mileage and still can vtec etc.

a long block is 1100, a new low mileage unopened stock engine with higher compression for a low price, readily available.. once you get it shipped to your door your lookin gat a couple-3 solid days of work and your driving again better than before.

we're giving you solid advice.. go with majority, one person already spoke about the re-build ... do it right the first time.

my 2cents.

if it helps, my h23 threw a rod bearing... i ended up trading my bad h23 for a used USDM h22... (+some cash of course). Swap only took me 2 weeks (nights and weekends), and i KNOW i spent ALOT LESS than what it would have been to repair my h23

That's terrible. Sorry to hear that. I would suggest to spend some time and do some research. I've never done swapping engines, but it soulds like majority recommends swapping. Even if it costs about the same, you'll get the performance with the H22.
