Timing Advance!!!

Yes, I did use the search button. But all I can find change timing advance in a stock engine. What about change timing with a after market cam gears? My Aem cam gear (-2 outside gear; 1 1/2 inside gear) sorry I forgot which one is the intake and the exhaust. What is stock timing at? The best setup timing advance degree for this car? How much hp gains when do this? How much does it cost to do timing? Will this affect the engine? Will it pass smog? Thanks.

Intake Cam = Closest to Intake Manifold
Exhaust Cam = Closest to Header

I do not have Cam gears so I have never done Cam timing. You might want to mention which engine you have (F22A, H23A, H22A). Im pretty sure you will pass SMOG, and gain some power.

Specify what timing. You could also advance your ignition timing with the distributor...

everytime you change your exhaust cam timing, make sure to use a timing light and correct your timing by the distributor. changing the cam advance/retard, effects your distributor timing.

I advanced my ignition timing by 2 degrees, and noticed a little boost in power (mostly throttle responce, and high rpm). Spec is 15 ±2... so advancing to 17 is still within safe spec, but with a little extra power.

Last week a friend and I went to the dyno to tune his 93 Prelude VTEC, after tuning everything, we tried advancing the timing and gained absolutely nothing at all. Just thought I'd share that.

Also....secondaries are good thing, keep them closed at low rpm (how they are stock)!

I tried adnvacing timing also and didn't notice anything. I've seen dyno's where there is only about 2hp gain at the top. Not worth it considering it puts extra pressure on the piston rings.
