Timing Adjustment answers... searched already hehe

hey guys, just to start out, this ISN'T the ken you know with the silver lude hehe... Ken is a friend of mine and I am just borrowing his account till i can get mine reactivated hehe =]

anyhow, I have been searching through here as well as h-t.com about my timing adjustment.

i have an advanced timing gun and all that it has is a knob on the back that you can dial. Below the knob is labeled "degrees advance" and the knob can go from 0 to 60.

originally, as i shined the timing light into the little hole, i couldnt see any marks what so ever on my flywheel. So i was a little confused at first as i figured i shoulda seen some marks sooner or later, but didnt. So i turned the car off and cranked it again and now when i went back to shine the light i could now see a mark.

I was reading there should be a red and white mark correct? well on my flywheel, one distinctive mark appears which i couldnt make out the color of it except the color of the groove it made on the flywheel (so just imagine someone took a flat head and just gave it good ding on the flywheel, no color). So, there's that, and as i decided to turn the knob on the back of my timing gun, i noticed i saw another set of grooves. These grooves also did not have any color. There was a 0 and two grooves located above and below it. From all the aforementioned, heres a little picture of what i am trying to describe:

dont mind the drawing =p.... but anyway, so what i have been reading is that i am supposed to set my timing gun to 15°. With my timing gun, how do i do that? set the dial to 15 first before shining the light or how does that work? and is 0 suppoed to be in between the > for it to be timed correctly?... does turning the dial take the place of adjusting the dizzy? how can i tell what degree i am at? and i know my service connector is jumped if the cel light stays on solid right?

thanks for the helpp guyssss

No that will give you 15 advance over the stock advance which is 15. You would be running 30 degrees total advance and you would get some serious knocking and run the chance of ruining your engine just idling. Put the T-light on 0 then adjust your distributor until you see the mark on the flywheel. Then if you want to advance your ignition by a couple degrees turn the knob to 2 or 3 then adjust then adjust the dist. until you see the mark again. This would give you a total of 17-18 degrees advance from TDC.

cool thanks man!... so the 0 on the flywheel is exactly what it means then? 0 degrees right? and the mark above it as in my crappy drawing would be the 15 ° mark i want

IIRC the mark at the top of your diagram represents Top Dead Center (or 0º advance/retard) and the marks at the bottom of the diagram are 15±2º before TDC. The TDC mark is white, you want to turn your distributor so that the red mark is aligned in the pointer.
