Timing adjustment on 4g Prelude!

How many Degrees should the timing be set on a VTEC and How in the world are you suppose to see the mark lignup when the crank is spinning so quickly? By the way, where exactly do I look when I adjust the timing. I tried to at the crankshaft but saw no marks.

Ever heard of a timing light??

Tell me this isn't a serious question?

But if it is, use a timing light, and point it into the area where the little cover pulls out of(right under where it says H22A1 on your motor). You have to jump the connector that is behind the center console on the drivers side; it is a white plug with 2 wires going into it. Take a marker and a measuring tape and make a mark right in the middle of the distributor over onto the bracket that the dist. bolts onto then make a mark on the dist. 5 millimeters under (towards you) where you made the other mark. Then loosen the bolts to the dist. and move the dist. towards the firewall until the mark on the dist. bracket lines up with the second line that you made. That will advance your timing about 5 degrees. You will also have to take out the bottom dist. bolt and keep it out because it will not bolt back in.

If you need to set it back to stock, perform the same things as above but don't worry about the marks. Just make sure that you jump the connector and then put all 3 bolts back into the dist. and tighten them down. Then just pull out the jumper and you are all done!!!

Yes, I did use a timing light but I just could not figure out where to look for the mark when it flashes.

Thanks.

OK, I see the flywheel spinning and the gun light blinking but what I'm I looking at on the flywheel. Should I be seing a red mark every time the gun light flashes? and also it has degree adjustment, do you know how many degrees vtec distr. should be set at?

there is a fixed pointer that you should aim it at, and yes there should be a red line. I explained the settings for you in the above post. Also, do you have the timing light running off of the #1 cylinder spark plug wire?

When I aim at the fixed pointer and the gun light flashes I should see the red mark at that instant? If that is it then I think I got it.

I think I have another problem! I used a Timing gun that had degree adjustement. I set it at 18 degr. and adjusted the timing Did I have to keep the Timing gun at zero and then adjust the distr? Otherwise I think I have 33 degr. advance! What problems could I have caused by having it advanced this much?

By the way, While I was adjusting I saw only 1 mark, it did not have any color, just flashy flywheel color. Man I think Im getting all confused here by reading other posts.

If you had 33 degrees your car wouldn't run!! Just set it at zero and try that OK!
