Thought I was lucky and rust free :(

Guess not.. today, in the sun, I noticed a weird looking spot on my car.. yup two tiny bubbles of rust in the common spot.. It must have come through in the past month or so.. never saw it before.. I ****in hate my car now. They are about the size of a pen tip.

There goes my savings, I feel like replacing the whole quarter panel since it has a few dings anyways.. I couldn't find it on hondaautomotive parts.. I really don't trust ANY body shop to do work on my car, and I can't stand the thought of non-original paint on my lude! ugh, it will never be the same.

I have read all the threads on it and know what I have to do, just wanted to vent..

you dont have to feel the rust on the inside of the rear fender, it wont really tell ya anything, theres an inner panel and an outer one, you wont be able to see whats inside until you start cutting out metal

i hate to be the bearer of bad news....

if youre seeing rust bubbles, then there going to be enough rust that you'll need to cut out metal.

the sooner you get to it you may be able to get away with just making a small hole. but you need to make sure you get rid of all of it or itll come back.

I just did all this on my 92, both 1/4 panels were really bad, i ended up cutting out quite a bit of metal. and if one 1/4 panel is rusting the other one probably isnt far behind. id make sure you check that out before you get a respray, cause having that other side bubbling out after you get a new paintjob will really ruin your day. do it right if you plan on keeping the car. at least you wont have to worry about the rust there for a long time

yup all of this i knew unfortunately..

the other side is probably on its way also.. I plan on keeping the car(I have invested so much money into it the past 3/4 of a year), and i might just replace the whole frickin quarter panel i don't know yet.. I don't want to get an entire respray, aftermarket paint sucks imo unless its done right(ie full respray/interior removed and all..), so i just wanna get the spot sprayed/blended...

hey garn, i have two quater panels that i was going to use to replace mine with, but i decided to not fix my lude. I bought them for $500 on ebay, used, off of a red 95. Rust free. They are cut on the from the inside part of where the tailight sits, all the way through the trunk floor, and so forth. you get from the middle of the door jam, back. Quater glass is also still in there and in tact. Im looking to just get rid of them for cheap, so if you're interested let me know. Although shipping will probably be out of the question cuz they are huge, but maybe we could work something out. make me an offer if interested.

sure. its not the easiest task to do, but body shops do it alot. Many many many spot welds to drill out

alas, I too have mucho rust on both the top of my rear wheelwell on the drivers side but also at the bottom front of it. However that is the least of my worries right now. the whole passenger side of my front end sags a bit and that fender is bent to all hell and primered.

I am sad.

preludatic: how cheap are we talking? i know i have to replace my driverside panel but i've put it off a year already and it will prolly be another year minimum before it gets done. but i'm waiting to do it right instead of a $500 hack job. in any case, just wondering how cheap you wanted to get rid of them for. i can always save them until i get it done.

i think it's kinda stupid to even talk about replacing rear 1/4s because of rust. Just cut the damn metal and weld in a new patch. Replacing a rear 1/4 isn't, by any means, a simple swap job, and it always brings with a fair chance of water leakage into your trunk.

well it also depends on how bad the rust as spread, and also how good you (or your bodyshop) is at shaping metal. If its small then its not a big deal, but if its a larger patch then a simple flat piece of metal won't do the job, it'll need to be shaped to fit. Bodywork also inevitably includes bondo which some people don't like.

well it's inevitable, a flat piece of metal will never do for the wheel well edge of the rear 1/4 as it curves out leading to the edge and then flattens out. I believe pieces are also pre-fabbed or something for that kind of work, but generally I would rather an experienced body shop cut, shape and weld a piece of metal onto my 1/4 than that same body shop or another of better reputation cut the whole 1/4 off and weld a new one on. I had the driver's rear 1/4 replaced on my 87 Prelude and for the most part, the shop did a great job ... then things got wet.
