Thermostat, where is it, how much is it, how to take out.
pretty much like the topic .. I want to test my thermo to make sure its working.. what what temperature should it open up?
where is it located on H23 Engine, what are the steps for removing .. im looking at http://www.icelord.net/honda/repair/ but can't find a guide with steps on it ...
from that guide's cooling system specs, thermostat opens at "starts" 169-176F and "fully opens" at 194F degrees.
couldn't find the thermostat in that repair guide. however, if you follow your main radiator hose from the radiator to where it enters the engine block, that is where the thermostat should be.

actualy another question.. about draining coolant, is this something i want to do or should I take it in and get a flush @ my shop and tell my mechanic i want to install this while its flushing ?
I did this on my 5g and it was a modest *****. Mainly due to spacing. Yes, if you pop the thermo off, it will dump your whole line onto the ground. And yes, i made a huge mess. I would suggest you just drain it off the radiator (the white tab thumb screw thingie). I would also agree, that after all that work, you might want to test it to learn how it 'works' but definately replace it. I paid like $21 at kragen for mine. And it hasnt acted up since (which a faulty thermo will do).
You might want to get an aftermarket thermo too i think its spoon that makes one. I dont know about that one ... i bought the kragen/schucks special :P
ps:
it was only 4 bolts on my 5g, it was just getting them off, and dealing with the split coolant :P And todd told me to drain the line too, i was just ignorant.
if none of the part stores have the aftermarket, which i doubt they will, just cuz its gettin bloody cold here and fast (-20degrees celcius next week and below) im gonna get it done asap. was so ****ing cold last time it was -20 in my car .. thats when the temp gauge didn't go past the first tick.
i have a mugen thermo...in the winter it SUCKS...my car is cold for about 30 mins but in the summer my car drives a lot better with the colder fluids in it...i would have 1 for each season for safe being
