taillight sealant

is there an easy way to pull off the sealant from the taillight lens and housing or does it just take time to get rid of it. i'd rather not put it back together with that junk in there at all. thanks

hehe mike....you snooze you loose, anywho, yea i'd say heat it up a little bit then just sorta scrape off with a screwdriver or something of the sort. or you could heat it back up and use it again...COULD being key, WOULD being more key

i thought of re-using it, too, but i'm not too keen on its distribution after i've pulled it apart. i don't want gaps in the sealant for water to get in, and i figure the best way to prevent that is to pull it all out and re-apply a fresh sealant.

I have done it many ways. All of which are a pain in the ass to get the old sealent out. The best method that worked for me is to heat it up and keep it warm,, and just start pulling on it. When its warm it stays together like gum, so it will eventually take more out with it when you pull on it.

If you are worried about it sealing 100% when you put it back together, then why not just run an extra bead of silicone sealant after you put them back together.

Here are my 2 cents -

I have done this countless times - im guess more than 30 or 40 times for people on this board

I have never take the sealant out and replaced it - and I have never had a single complaint of water leaking in - I have had the same pair on my car for years and it has never leaked ( since 1999 when i first started doing it) and i have actually taken my tail apart a couple times to do different custom things...

^^ lol, I should've sent you mine, I left one in the oven for a little too long and basically gave up partway through trying to squeeze them back together.
