Tach question: Why does it stop at 2k

I drove a 94 VTEC 4G today and the tach would run up to 2k and stop. Wouldn't go past it. Any ideas why it does this? My first thought was the cluster needed to be replaced.

Any ideas or thoughts are appreciated

no the speedo and tach are run magnetically. That's why if you put something magnetic next to them they'll go all crazy. They're pretty well shielded though for things like speaker magnets and such.

I'd say it's your tach

Easy replacement? What, a gauge cluster? Yeah if you can find an EL guage cluster for a VTEC, which I need.

What did you think of the 4G VTEC, besides the fact the tach didn't work right? Are you gonna get it.

andy, sorry i didnt get your message until tonight... i dont know why its not working, but...

i pulled out my gauge cluster in my 94 lude once and it wasnt too complicated to replace. i think the part is what will rape you. maybe you can find one in a junkyard? id say give the car a complete checkover, see if the 90k service has been done, see how the clutch feels, and if the price is right, then you can look into replacing the cluster.

There is a big dent in the front right fender. No Stereo. Whole center console needs replaced. The engine is filthy dirty. Window tint is peeling apart. Tach doesn't work. The 5Zigen wheels are curbed. The tires are too small. It has one of those bras on the hood and it has scratched it up. The cup holder was messed up. The clutch felt like mush.

Things they said have been serviced: New Clutch I asked if the 90k service had been completed and he said "I don't know" So he called the owner of the place and asked what all have been done.

He said, new CV boots and tie rods. I asked him about the 90k service. He said, "What all is done in that?" So I told him... to which he replied had all been completed. He said something about all the suspension being redone. Although they were all stock parts.

I shot him a price of 4000 and I would write him a check. He said best he could do is 6200.

So I left it at that. Too much work to be done for the car to be worth 6200

the first gear and second gear pull was promising. But I kept dropping out of VTEC because I was afraid of over revving the motor not knowing how high I was on the tach.

above 60 the car just seemed to die. Wasn't pulling very hard at all. I put it through the ringer too. I think my auto 93 Si was faster in all honestly.
