Tach prob

for awhile now my rpm guage has been off. i hit my limiter at about 5600rpms (7200) so im guessing its showing about 1600rpm lower than what im really at. At idle it sits on 0. This problem started about 2 days after my alarm broke, i had to unhook the brain. So...could this possibly be my distributor? The car drives normal..its just not correct. I've replaced the cap and rotor but that fixed nothing. Also, my alarm was not a remote start..so it really shouldnt have anything to do with the tach i would think. Any help would be great!

Did you hook the alarm brain back up or is still unhooked? If it's still unhooked, try putting it back and seeing if your tach goes back to normal. I guess the only other thing is to have it calibrated. There's adjustment screws (calibration I'm guessing) on the back of the gauge cluster. I don't know which one does what though.

yeah i did...the alarm constantly goes off...if i hook the brain back up its in a valet mode and i cant start the car, then the alarm just loops.

There's a thread on the site somewhere were someone was having a similar problem. He replaced the distributor and the ECM (or something like that) and it solved his problem. I bet replacing the distributor would also get rid of that horrible noise coming from your engine.
