Swapping from analog to EL cluster question again...

Hey guys,

I'm starting to familarize myself with the 4th gen stuff (I know quiet a bit about the 5th gen alread) and I'm planning to do the an analog swap from a 92 cluster over to the EL gauges from a 96. I have the complete wiring from the 96... is it just plug and play from there on? I know I've read others who had to match up wires but in my case I have the complete harness, un tampered with.

Thanks guys... I'm sure I'll have more questions for ya later.

Keith

then you should be all set...the only time that I know of that you have to do some wiring is if you are using the wiring harness from a prelude that doesn't come with the EL gauges.

Yeah, I have EVERYTHING. I basically unplugged all the connections when removing the dash on both sides of it and removed the cluster from the dashboard. I just wanted to make sure that everything will plug right in without any modifications.

also make sure that you use the dimmer box, the black box that is on the passenger side behind the clock, because the old one doesn't work correctly with the new setup.

You'll be all set with the whole wiring harness. I didn't really have any problems since my dash is missing a million screws anyways from the previous owner. The only thing you have to do is unplug the old harness and replace it with the new one. I had a few left over wires from the drivers side that I didn't do anything with and everything seems fine so I'm not worried. On the passanger side, you have to ground one wire (you'll know which one it is because its the only one left over on the passanger side of the dash) You should have a little connector left over, just take out the black wire and ground it.

If you don't ground this wire, your blinkers will both blink when you signal. On the outside it'll work right, but inside its just annoying to get both blinkers instead of just one like its suppose to. Took me forever to find that out and I was going nuts, lol.

Okay, I might be asking a stupid question, but at least I'm not making a new thread.

I got everything on my 1993 installed from a 1994. I have the complete dash. What I can't figure out is why my odometer won't show up. The fuel/temp gauges halfway light up, but it's like they're not getting enough power. I can see the "Trip 1/2" light up, but no numbers. I did have to remove the wiring and brain from my alarm, but I'm thinking it has nothing to do with it, since everything from the alarm is removed, even the wiring.

Also, on the driver's side of the harness, I have 2 green and 1 blue connectors. I haven't gotten the rest of the old harness out, because I can't figure out where these last three are on the old harness. Jinusean: are these the leftover wires that you had?

An input would be greatly appreciated!

if you had the whole wiring harness from a 94, I don't know why you would be having problems. the 2 green and 1 blue plugs on the drivers side could be the sunroof/cruise control/dimmer switch connections.

That was it! I'm assuming since the dimmer switch wasn't hooked up, it was causing problems with the lighting. Everything works perfect now!

jdm cluster isnt going to fit in a LHD usdm dash. the housing and clear plastic is different. it curves the opposite way.

I've done a JDM analog to JDM EL swap on my JDM lude if you want any help. The wiring is the same colour wise, but goes to different locations on the dials.

I had to cut the EL loom plugs off and wire them up to my analog loom since the EL loom didn't have cruise or sunroof functions.

I also had a dimmer problem which was solved when I disconnected the dimmer relay.

I've done the usdm to jdm el cluster conversion so if you need any help, create a new thread and ill try my best to help you out.
I've encounter pretty much all of the technicle problem there can be from swapping from usdm to jdm el cluster.

It was difficult to figure out what wire did what, but was all colour matching in the end and took about 30 mins to wire the new loom.

The trouble with the JDM ELs compared to your USDMs is the wires go to different places, and there are different connectors on the gauges.

However the JDMs look a lot cooler ;-)
