sunroof removal

i tried searching for a bit more detail on this subject but with little luck. is it necessary to pull off the headliner to remove the sunroof? my car will be going into the body shop early next week to be painted. i will be receiving a new sunroof this week, due to rust damage on the current one. and i would rather swap it out then the shop if it requires taking off the headliner. thanks in advance!

I believe the headliner DOES need to come down to get the sliding panel off. Maybe not off completley, but at least pulled down enough to gain access to the bolts. I'm not positive though, because I was inside paying for my sunroof panel while a guy at the junkyard pulled it off of a wrecked car.

All of this is from memory, so you'll have to excuse me if it's a littlw off, but for the most part it's right I know.

undo a few screws or bolts on the front, then it's mostly snaps that holds the rest in. Open the SR halfway then unsnap the liner, pull it forward and try to turn it sideways. You should be able to pull it out the top this way. After that you have about take off four bolts on each side... 12mm I think... I could be wrong.

Anyway, with those off, it should just come out. Watch for the loose brackets that are in between the roof and the slider bracket. While it's off, re-tighten the four screws on each side, this will prevent you fomr having a rattle later on down the road.

And the sunroof isn't that heavy and one person, unless he/she is an invalid, should easily be able to lift it off.
