Being as I'm new to message boards and tuning, please excuse my ignorance.
3 Months ago I had a bone stock 92 SI with 173K miles on it. The H23 was in bad shape on account of the previous owner. I originally was intending to get some life out of the car until I could afford a new one several years down the way, but after driving my roommate's 2001 ITR and experiencing VTEC for the first time I decided to go with the JDM H22 swap. I also figured I might as well do some other upgrades when the swap took place so I went with Tokico struts, pro-kit springs, slotted rotors, AEM CAI and gutted the CAT and had the 1.75" piping replaced with 2.5" piping, adding to it, the Apexi N1 (N/A setup). Just last week I put on the DC Sport SS headers and recognized that I've actually got a respectable prelude for the first time.
With all the money I've invested, I've got a car that performs better than the average prelude I see running around Jacksonville (don't see too many Ludes around here...mostly Teg's and Civs). My concern is that when I'm running on the open stretch of 9A, past JTB, most everyone that runs there, runs to near top end. The reason that most people I run with beat me seems to be because of my first two gears. I love 3rd, that's a mean f***in' gear and usually that's where I make up lost ground or pull a lead. But I'm tired of having to wait until 3rd. I'd like to find a way to have to overcome that handicap.
My roommate suggested that I go with Cam Gears, and another friend that I also trust said to look into lightened flywheel, and another friend said that I should be considering autoX'ing the car and utilizing the Lude's handling instead of speed (I don't have a strut bar and don't really know if I need one). I really don't know what to do. I know a lot of people have differences in opinion, but I really am starting to get confused as to what I should do. I don't have the money to supercharge or turbo it, and I'm not one to try to be the quickest...but I do drive fast (average speed through Jax has to be about 85-90 ) but when I do come across the riced out Civ's and Teg's I'd like to be able to hang even or pull a lead on those with the B-16 swaps so when it comes to 3rd they get a good look at the Lude's taillights instead of me gaining on theirs'. Any information that might help me quicken the car without having to spend a ton of money would be a definite plus, especially since I'd like to be able to do something without having to consult roommates and friends.
I dunno, it's a bit frustrating!!!!

Dude, I'm from Jacksonville, too!!!!! Whatsup? What color is your car? Anyways, about speed, little things add up. You could try port and polishing your head, getting some upgraded cams, take off some weight, etc. Any of these things will help you a little bit. Most people who don't want to wait to get turbo and want a quick fix get nitrous, but I think the bottle is for babies. Sorry to offend anyone, but we all have our own opinion! Anyways, did you ever go out to Phillips or Alta?
Right on...I knew there had to be someone from Jacksonville on here. I'd seen a few from South Florida. I don't know the official color's name, but I'd have to say it's FRESCO BLUE PEARL (that better?). I don't really get a chance to get out that often. I usually run into friends that are out and we meet up around Beach and St Johns Bluff and head to JTB and 9A to run there. I've been out to Alta a few times, but never ran there. And Phillips...well lets just say I can't stand the St. Johns County Sheriff's dept..nuff said. I'm really new to tuning so any advice I can get would be great. I'm steering clear of nitrous, probably get turbo sometime this year. I'm just looking for something that will give me an advantage that isn't really going to run more than about $600. I know I can put that toward a turbo and get it a little sooner, but I'm tired of having to play catch-up...I'd rather have the lead from the start.

Sweet. Mine's Milano Red, but she's 'under the weather' right now, but she'll be back out causing nightmares soon!! I know all about those damn St. Johns county cops. They accused us of being terrorists after they saw us on the side of Racetrack Rd. What part of town are you from? I'm from the Southside, and my bf lives at the Beaches. He has a Prelude, too. We should meet up sometime!! We have a couple of friends with Preludes also.

I agree with you... bottle is a cheap way to get power. for the babies that dont wanna get there hands dirty and get the realy kick from FI.
Southside's just right around the corner. I live near the beach, but on the other side of the ditch on San Pablo. I know a small number of people that drive preludes, but most of them drive 5th gen...but preludes nonetheless. I'm all for meeting up. I'm tellin' you before hand mine's not pretty, but she runs well now. Just let me know when and where.

ok FIRST YOUR CAR IS NOT BLUEISH PURPLE..IT'S FRESCO bLUE PEARL..DON'T LET P2W HERE YOU ADMIT THAT IT'S PURPLE...
Now then as to answer your original questions. Cam gears will be used to tune the engine and maybe net you 1-2 hp. Sounds like you want more oomph down low in 1st and second gear. A lighter flywheel will allow you to rev your car faster there by hitting vtec sooner. So that might be what you are looking for. Sounds like you could use a VAFC, help tune your fuel curves and lower your vtec engagment points. Some people have netted 7-10 hp with proper tuning also make sure you run 93 octane or higher on that JDM motor as they were built to run 101 octane gas

no no he was sadley mistaken..he's just a new car owner that does not apreciate the true color of his lude. I'm sure he'll go back and edit that post very soon..won't you Zorin? (lower right hand corner "edit/delete")

Okay, okay...I've memorized the color...Fresco Blue Pearl. Didn't mean to offend you P2W .
I've considered getting a VAFC but wasn't sure whether the gains would be substantial. If so, what type is the best to get. There's several different ones, and I don't necessarily need the one that looks the best, but rather performs the most best.
Given the circumstances and cost, what is the best recommendation then? If I go the VAFC Route, would I need anything specific for it. And if I go with the lightened flywheel, what do I need to look out for, or what would I also need or need to consider. I'm sorry, but I really don't know that much and this board has given me a ton of information so far, I'm just trying to apply the ton of things I've learned in the past month or so.
Thanks for all the help so far.

The apexi VAFC seams to be the best at around $400 new or $300 used, you can adj your fuel curve to suit your driving needs and lower the vtec engagment point from the the stock 4000rpm to a lower 3000rpm. Esentially putting the power where you need it most. Nothing else is needed for the install except instructions and patiience.. also a good dyno for tuning it after it's installed.
as for the flywheel I probably swap in a new clutch while you got the tranny apart for more grip and a better bite during launch..
don't worry about p2w his bark is louder than his bite..until a few weeks ago he was driving around in a f22 single overhead cam auto prelude...(thought I'de forget huh p2w) the car color thing is an ongoing battle around here...Fresco blue pearl ludes are very rare in color as it was only offered in 92. Be proud of your color.
If I go VAFC, I was looking at the Apexi and it comes pretty well recommended. So this is probably what I'll wind up doing.
If I choose to go with the flywheel, what type do you recommend and what clutch would you suggest to go with as well. I'm really looking for something that gives that added power and is still suitable for a daily driver as I occasionally let my g/f drive the car. She's drives well, has the VTEC down pat, and I'm trying to sell her on the idea of dropping an H22 in her 94 accord. You guy's are a great help so far.
P2W, the Fresco Blue Pearl is pretty damn sharp on 4th Gens. I have to admit I like the color
