Stripped Oil pan drain hole... crap!

well I was chaning the oil this past weekend... & I removed the drain plug (bolt/plug what ever you wanna call it) & when I went back to tighten it... it would become loss after a couple of turns... so I went to buy a new one.... same thing happen. SO I'm guess the drain hole is stripped... what do I do?.. Just re-thread it? if so do you think I have to remove the oil pan?? It's currently leaking oil ... about a drip every 5 minutes or so.... dip stick still reads full... lmk.. thanks guys.

I don't know if it would be safe to re-thread. If I had extra cash, I would buy another oil pan. Maybe e-bay?

I would recommend just replacing the oil pan...

but even you want to rethread the hole on the oil pan... you have to take it out b/c if you think about it... you're shaving off particles that'll be inside the oil pan and you have to clean that out and what not... don't want to have any particles left on the oil pan....

so yea... I'd think it'll be easier and safer to just buy a new oil pan...

NM!! got a solution... Autozone sells this drain plug that is tappered & self-tapping. It's an oversized plug... all you have to do is start screwing it on there like you would the OEM one... then once it gets to the thicker part, it starts to rethread the pan... It also sevres as a drani plug. This plug will also have very minimal or no shaves at all.... BUT I have a lil extending magnet that I'm ganna put in there to catch all the shavings if any .... & I'm also ganna run some oil thru it just in case I missed any.

Well using that self tapping plug is .. meh ok. I wish I would have thought about the teflon tape before... the bad thing about using this self tapping plug... is that you need to make sure it goes on STRAIGHT!!... which with my luck, it didn't. It's a tad bit crooked. It does tigthen.... but doesn't completely seal. It still drips a very small amount of oil.... also the shavings where something I had to worry about. I will place teflon tape on it tomorrow... something my father-in-law suggested I could do AFTER I had already replaced the plug.

might as well buy a new pan. u dont want to rethread it with it on the car. Or another way to fix it would be to take the pan out, clean it up, fix problem, rethread it, and put i back...if u got the tools and a lift, u should go that route, its pretty easy, that was going to be my frist option when I had the same problem, but lucky me it was only bearly stripped, i just baught a slighty bigger bolt, and it slid right in, havent had a problem since. changed the oil about 4 times since.

If it ever happens to me again, i ll just take the pan out and make a custom hole and use something is aw at discount, where u attach the base to the pan, and anytime u want t change the oil, just plug up a tube on it, and open the valve, and it lets the oil out.

to take out the oil pan, you gotta unattach the header right? and if you do that, youde need new o rings (dc sports), correct? my oil pan is sweating a little bit so im thinkin to replace the oil pan gasket, but does that mean ill have to let down the header and get new o ring gaskets for it aswell? and the soft gasket thing on the cat side? thanx.
