Strange CEL only in 5th gear...need help

So my CEL only comes on when I get up into 5th gear and only when the speed is greater than 50mph. It will stay on, unless I cut the engine and then restart it...at which point the CEL goes off. I did try to get the code while the engine was on, but all that happened was the SRS light began to blink.

Any ideas on what this could be?

So how do I pull the code, since every time I turn the car off and wire up the pull the codes nothing happens and the CEL doesn't come on at all. All I see is the SRS flash.

Leave the car running when it's on and plug in.

It should be stored in the ECU despite the light not being on though.

Leaving the car running and plugging in while the cel is on is exactly what I did. And nothing. When I turn it off and plug in and turn the car on I still don't get the cel going on and it doesn't flash either. I'm at a loss as to what to do next.

Car off, cell off, plug in. Now go drive till it turns on and read it then as soon as it pops up. If that doesn't work I am sorry I am at a loss here.

Codes like the knock sensor that are tripped when the engine speed exceeds a certain RPM will clear themselves but you should still be able to pull it right after driving. You don't crank the car BTW when trying to read codes, just turn the key to the ON position, the service check connector has to be jumped before turning the key on.

So I did the following this morning on my way to work:

Car off, CELoff, plug in.
SRS started to flash
after about 10 mins of driving and in 5th gear CEL goes on and stays on

No codes being generated
I remove plug
STS stops flashing

Anyone have any ideas on what this could be and how the heck I troubleshoot the CEL.

Last FYI, if I turn off the car while I'm driving in 5th and jump it again the CEL will go OFF and does not come back on....

Somehow you're doing it wrong, I know because the SRS codes aren't read using that jumper, the SRS system codes are read using a jumper harness that the dealer has.

Key off
Paper clip in 2 pin blue connector behind radio
Turn key to ON position
Light will flash

I've read codes that don't get stored doing this right after driving, so I know it works.

So I'm plugging into the tan color 2 wire connector. The blue one is 3 wire so I don't connect into it. I connect to it and then turn the car in the on position and get the dashboard lit up but the cel does not light all I get is the srs blinking. I don't know what else I should be doing

So are you using a scan tool of some sort plugged into the OBDII diagnostic port on the right side (passenger side) at the front of the console?

There is a blue 2 pin connector behind the radio, your jumping the wrong connector... >_>

Yeah! I got it guys...thanks for all your patience and sticking with me, but I finally found the 2 pin blue service connector...I saw it have 1 long blink and 2 quick blinks after...so I assume that's a 12, which means a Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR VALVE LIFT SENSOR)

Now the big question...what do I do next?

Ok folks I found the download here: http://prelude.openbarr.com/manuals/...92-96_lude.pdf

And the pages associated with the EGR ar 11-153. I will be removing and cleaning the EGR valve today and start the work of troubleshooting...
