SR-V VTEC Drive Axle

Anyone had one of these replaced? My dealer says my one of my CV Joints is messed up and it's too late to patch, so I should replace the whole drive axle. Does this make sense?

Of course, these axles are not to common and will cost me like $500 Canadian ($300US) for a new one. Any ideas on how I can get my hands on one? Anybody have one laying around? And also, they are different than 5th gen drive axles aren't they?

Thanks

I have recently changed my driver side axle and it costed me $190US. This is performed from a general mechanic shop. The replacement unit is probably a remanufacturered axle. You can check the price of a brand new one from www.hondaautomotiveparts.com

Thanks for the info. I think the problem is that there were no rebuilt ones in the area so new was the only way to go. They said there aren't many around because it's a "double" axle...what does that mean and does it make any sense. I didn't have a chance to ask the guy.

double axle? hmm, never heard of that

i got mine changed at home by this mechanic i know for $120. he installed one of those remanufactured ones

if ur doing the repair at the dealer, they will want to sell u the more expensive oem part and rape u w/ the labor charges.

Yeah I use the dealer to find out what needs to be done. I go in for oil changes, they tell me a 1000 things that should be done on my car. They price it out, then I say and go on the search for the parts myself!

Yeah, a remanufactured axle is about $80-100 US dollars if you trade in your old one (not including labor). At least that is what I was quoted...

NEVER, And I repeat NEVER use a remanufactured Axle. There is nothing but problems with them. The biggest problem is the in order to referbish them, they have to grind into the case hardening. This weakens the axle, and reduces it's life. Most remanufactured units will only last about 6months to a year. I am not talking about the boots going bad, but the actual joint itself going bad. instead check out this site: www.raxles.com The guys name is Marty, and they rebuild axles with only new outer joints, and sometimes new inner ones as well. The use of the new joint is very important. he also promises them to as good or better than OEM. He has great customer service, and is very pleasant to deal with. You can pick up axles for about 119 a side. these are basically brand new, unlike autoparts stores, or Hondas remanufactured exchange program. If you need something stronger check out www.driveshaftshop.com His name is Frank, and can custom make just about any axle or axle/hub combo. I just recently installed a set of their stage 3 axles.

Thanks Dr. James, I was wondering about the remanufactured axles...I checked out raxles.com, and will probably inquire with them. I really don't need anything stronger so I'm sure they be able to hook me up.

I'm lucky I got axles with my new engine, thought I'll have to get new boots for the outer joint since they pulled on the shaft to get them out and the outer joint are seperated from the shaft on both. I'm using my old one until they fail then I'll put the new ones

Hey Satan,
With my experiences with CV joints it is easier to replace the axle, for the simple reason that the labour on replacing the part would cost you almost as much as the axle. And with the CV joints if the boot is ripped all kinds of Crud gets in there and would never be the same. There are a few places that you can go to get used ones.. I have not gotten a used one so I am not sure what the warrenty would be, but if you want the name of the place pm and I'll have a look for the Number.

YES! This was my next question. I'm thinking of buying a JDM Type-S engine to drop in. So I will get a new err fairly new axle.

But if my boot is split (it is and it wasn't noticed until too late so = new axle) I still have to do new ones when I put in the new axle? You have to understand I now jack about axles...thanks
