Squeaky Steering Wheel...Why?

Sup pplz,

I'm having a problem....it's been like this since I bought the car but now it's bothering me more than before. When I turn the wheel in either direction it squeaks. It sounds like a dog crying or something . It does it more with my 17" wheels than it does with my stock wheels. It's kinda embarrasing too because you can even here it outside.....

I don't know if the noise is coming from inside or outside the car..........any ideas?

All of the belts were changed a couple of months ago. It's been doing the same thing even before the belts were changed. It's definitely not a belt though. It sounds like it's coming from inside the car from the steering column.

Is there a specially made type of steering fluid made just for Honda cars? I've heard of it before but never seen it.

Lower ball joint possibly. Happened on my 3rd gen before. Does it sound like it's coming from your suspension at all? Ask a friend to turn the wheel, and if you can hear it from that area too, it could very well be the lower ball joint.

I believe it's wise to use ONLY genuine Honda power steering fluid. I've heard that quite a bit.

it's most likely your lower ball joint or inner tie rod or outer tie rod...but definetly one of those three things...just take it to a frame and steering place and they'll tell you right away...then do it yourself!

Could it possibly be the upper ball joint? When I was putting my springs in the dust cover got cracked. Grease was leaking out. I just bought the ball joint boot a couple of days ago but haven't put it in yet. Think this would solve the problem. Guess I should check my other ball joints just incase.

Fixed It!

It was actually the front left upper ball joint. I cleaned it out the replaced with a brand new boot from Honda.....after I greased the hell out of it. Squeak went away completetly.

And now.......to the "vibrating when I hit 55mph" steering problem.

could be a bent rim....(vibration)

and that's weird that the squeeking happened when you turned the wheel if it was your upper ball joint...i know my upper ball joint or upper control arm squeeked when i when over little bumps, and went away by spraying some lube up there!

My dad's ES300's steering wheel vibrated horribly when going 55 mph or more. He got it checked out and the mechanic said it was his tires (unevenly worn) and the front left rim had a small bend in the lip.

Yeah I know.....it sux......I think it could be my tires though. I'm gonna put on my winter rims (stock) soon....so I guess I'll know then. I've gotta get summer tires anyway. Looking at Nitto 555's.
