squeak squeak.. rattle rattle .. ca-CLUNK

I'm posting here , because I own a 4g .. and not in car audio because the rattles / squeaks / ca-clunk is still there when my stereo isn't shaking my car apart...

I think we should post the common rattles / squeaks etc. and links to, exisitng threads that fix em so we have an all in 1 thread..

Right now, my annoyances are:

The front dash, by the air vents going to windshield theres a constant sqeaking as I drive ... This started when I used black magic dash wipes ... (doh!) What can I do to revive this and make it quiet again?

Being that its winter, My sunroof creaking/rattling is back ... its worse this year than before...
Figured out why the sunroof\moonroof rattles I beleive this is cleaning the tracks and tightening a couple things..

Every time I go over a bump, the front is fine (ca-) but the back seems like it drops and just clunks .. it sounds like somethin in the trunk drops and its very loud .. this is not shock knock .. I do have H&R sports and KYB agx .. it started after I got this setup?

Shock Knock
When your driving and hear a knocking/subtle clunking from the back, its the top of the shock towers knocking .. its not in english, but add some washers on top of the strut tower.
FIX: http://www.preludeteamholland.com/Mo.../Techniek.html

As well, coming from the center console area theres a creaking .. I'm not sure where this is, but after having it off should I maybe glue a thing piece of felt or something to the metal cage around the deck? what about the seams where its plastic on plastic?

The rear deck is hella loud as well .. rattles etc. when the ster0 was pumping.. Where are these rattles and whats the fix ??

as extreme as it is, and probably better for acoustics etc. dynamatting everything galore (or brown bread will be my choice based on price and availability being in Canada-suggestions welcome) can anybody give advice on how they silenced any creaks, rattles, ca clunks etc. to make the car solid sounding ??

I hate driving in my moms new sebring, or my step dads z71, or my buddys golf, or my gf's (shudder) cavalier and noticeing it coasts over bumps without a sound .. it makes the car feel smoother ... as far as turning the stero up to drowned this out .. it got jacked so im SOL for a while ..

This is long but... If we can get a solution to ever common creak/squeak/rattle and ca-clunk it'll be a wicked reference and we'll be plenty happy with very quiet cars.

Alllright dude, where can I start? I experience several of the same problems. The one that's been bothering me particularly as of late is the sound from the rear when I go over a bump, as if the spare tire isn't secured down and flies up and plops back down again. I'm going to take a look at that non-english site later.

As for the front dash squeaking, are you SURE it's not a squeak to the right of your steering wheel, almost sounding like it's coming from your right tweeter area? If you change your mind, and decide that is where it's coming from, I have a fix... my pops gave me his logon to Honda's ISIS service bulletin network, and I downloaded .pdf bulletins addressing problems I thought I had had at the time. I think I still have that one, let me know if you decide that it is the problem, because there's a bulletin which involves removing the driver's side tweeter and the power inverter behind it, removing the inverter from it's bracket and bending two tabs on the inverter or bracket, so when it's put back together, they press against each other, with no space to move about. The noise that was being made before i performed this on my car was an annoying squeak, or chirp from the dash area, it took me a little while to pinpoint where it was coming from.

As for the center console creak, let me ask you this: does your center console warp or arch up at the point where the shifter-section of the console meest the armrest/cubby section of the console? If so, that could be the creak, if it is, I DO have that .pdf hosted, and you'll have to buy 2 cheap metal clips from Honda and perform a few simple steps, here's that .pdf:

Warped Console Bulletin

I have a rattle, or tapping noise coming from either my passenger-side C-piller, or somwhere in one of the ceiling panels behind the sunroom area. I have another .pdf bulletin addressing the possible free-motion of the rear-windshield brake lamp wiring harness, and it's contact with the plastic cover beneath it. When i get some time, I'm just going to perform that bulletin and rule out whether or not that's the culprit. Take a peek at it and see if it's a problem for you too:

Rattle from the Rear Headliner

I don't believe I have any rattles on the rear decklid, but the ones I have are bothering the piss out of me at the moment. I know exactly what you mean when you say it bothers you that some of these POS cars you've driven or ridden in don't rattle at all, but you Prelude does, I feel the same way. I'm going to launch a full-fledged anti-unwanted-sound campaign on my car and as I progress, I'll post back here. Hope this helps dude, Adam.

I also get the rear suspension clunking - several visits to the mechanic but to no avail. Bushings are in pristine condition since the 5-lug conversion and swaybar links seem to be okay.

It really annoys me too, even going over small bumps on a relatively smooth road will give a couple of clunks or so - and if you concentrate, you can actually feel the clunk resonate through the chassis under your feet - so obviously there's enough movement for the suspension to make such a noise. I'm gonna take it apart myself and see if I can ghetto fix it...

I'll see what I can do, I'll probably just borrow my dad's user/pass when he's not on (Honda kicks me off when he and I are using it at the same time) and find all bulletins for the 4g, I can be like Super Bulletin Man ... err, yeah anyway, I'll see what I can do.

My car does the same clunking ever since I dropped it,too. I hate it so much that I may go back to stock springs. I am going to have my buddy look at it this Friday and see if he can fix the problem.

MINE IS DOING THAT TOO!!! I am running on KYB AGX's and H&R Sports and ever since I got them it cluncks over bumps. It really bothers me. I know it is not shock knock as I have done the mod to prevent it. We need to figure out what it is

just thought id give my .05 (inflation)

the center console fix only works on 9(3)4-96 my 92 doesnt have those slots

most of the little things i noticed rattling, were after i got my stereo. i hate noises like that so i spent a whole summer sitting in the back of my car .

-the latch that you pull to lower the folding seat will vibrate enough to be noticeable.

- my rear bumper was making quite a bit of noise, i looked for gaps and filled them with great stuff expanding foam

- check and make sure nothing has falllen UNDER the center console, or is under the seat, again my 92 w/ lame center console,
i found a cd case and a journal while i was dynamatting my car. from the original owner.

-pull the door panels and make sure all the clips are there, and seat properly.

re: the rear suspension clunking - if any of you are really interested, I'm going to dissect my suspension this weekend to find out. My mechanic also advised that it'll make these noises when the car is dropped, but mine's been getting worse - or maybe I'm just taking more and more notice

Oh what, excellent feedback on this ...
the clunking I hear from the pass. side of my car by the tweeter sounds like something may be in side and just bouncing .. definately a rattle or a clunking.

and My center console is definately warped, and I have a 1992. where the 2 pieces come together it doesn't join up. Mind you its not screwed in but when I push on it the sqeaks go away.

My pass. side sun visor rattles when its put into that clip at top too .. as far as the sunroof part, I think its behind me on the left side where the seatbelt goes in, behind that panel.. Sometimes I hear it when the bass is turned up ... and my driver side chair is sqeaking now too when I go over bumps .. grr.

we should make this our brainstorming thread and resolution thread and then post a wicked write up on the resolution to every type of rattle. We MUST have sILEnce in the cabin!!

Yep - also about sunroof rattle - I've taken mine apart, and even added some padding in between the ceiling 'fabric' and the roof panel, but it doesn't seem to help. I found out it's actually the arms that hold that sunroof in place - they have these helper guides that determine the angle of the roof on how open it is - they also loosely move from side to side about an 1/8 of an inch, and i can't think of a way to keep them still without making the main sunroof arms not move...

How do you remove the attaching clips to pull off the rear headliner? Just pull and yank? Or is there something to squeeze in there to release the clips?

Same question for the door panels.

door panels are easy, check the faq I think its in there, otherwise search.

By the mirror inside the door theres a plastic piece, pullit off there is a screw.

theres screws in where the door handle is / power window /lock etc. take out that screw (there maybe a round plastic think, it flips back like a ketchup bottle lid) also in the handle you use to close the door thers a screw, 2 or 3 more at the bottom, one inside the area in the door jam.

once the screws are out, pull from the bottom and it'll pop out of the clips and you can lift it off the window sill.

As for the rear headliner, im not even sure which part ...

for searching first!

I don't want to search (maybe later)

Thanks for the tips. When you say pull from the bottom, pull up or pull down?

Thanks! I appreciate it!

Ok sweet!
Are there tricks to lining them up when putting it all back together, or is it plug and play?

I as well replaced the rear bushings, collars, washers and all that. Didn't fix it. About 3 days later, strut fluid started coming out of my right rear strut telling me it was blown, which I'm sure can feasibly cause a "clunking" noise to accomodate my Lincoln-like ride quality. If it's not that, I've came to the conclusion that one of my exhaust hangers is worn out, allowing the exhaust pipe to hit the swingarm when I go over bumps.

I'm blessed with a Prelude that has little to no rattles, squeaks, etc. Although my windows are loose in their tracks, so if I close the door or hit a bump with the windows cracked, they kinda rattle. Really pisses me off, but hey, the car's 12 yrs. old.

This is a very good thread!

Back from the dead...

I was searching through some old pm's, and one had to do with this thread... with regards to the suspension clunking - since then I've put in new tein HA's, and greased most of the bushings.

I've narrowed it down to my rear swaybar endlinks and bushes - which I'll be replacing (both front and back) very soon, updates to come, if anyone's interested

I'm very interested.. what sound are you getting??

I've been getting a "clink clink" when i've been going over bumps lately ... I've no idea what its from or if its from both front & rear ...

I know my heat shield on my cat is toast (rusted through) but I'm waiting to do a swap next year before I change it out with my carsound ..
