my rpm sometime jumps when i am stepping hard on the gas. it goes from 3K to 4K then drop back down to 3K...from 4K to 5500...etc...i did a tune up,clean fuel injector, reseal the valve cover, radiator, thermastat..etc..in spend about 1500 to 2000 but this rpm happen after i did the above stuff...i was told it was the coil on the rpm.."since its related to electricial, you might want to change the whole speedometer".. does any1 know about this? thnx for the help

im probably wrong, but i had a problem sorta like this on my 90 prelude, was the speedo cable that goes to the tranny.. was just a loose connection, would touch sometimes other times wouldnt..
but all I remember is it messed with my mph, I have no memory of it messing with the RPM.. just something else to check you know? sorry I couldnt be more help
There's no cable on the 4th gen Prelude and up, it's purely electrical.
Your problem is more than likely in or related to the speed sensor. The only way to check it is to try another unit. If that doesn't fix the problem, you will need to start hunting for electrical problems with the wiring or perhaps the speedo itself.
I have the same problem except its my mph that is affected. When i'm driving around town, my needle jumps up and down rapidly and sticks to speed too fast or too slow than what i'm actually doin. I remember driving about 80mph and having many cars pass me quickly, it turns out that i was actually doing 70mph, so i would like to know the cause also...

i wish i have another unit to try...is there a place that i can get 1 to test? cuz i dont want to spend $$ if i dont have to..the shop want 350 to replace it for me..with a used 1...but my mileage will be different..
mine did that with the speedo needle, turned out to be the cluster... i have a few extra 94-96 SI clusters around, they kept sendin me the wrong one when i wanted a VTEC one and i got to keep the ones they mis-shipped

you would need the electrical troubleshooting manual.
they are about $70 from Honda.
More than likely its just the distributor. I had an Accord that did the same thing and that was the problem.
