I've read that the Civic Type-r wheel fits (don't know which generation). But even I've asked around if anybody knows for sure or has installed one. No word so far.
I am also looking for an OEM steering wheel swap that will help me keep my airbag and also have stereo controls.
well I was under the impression that the splines were different sizes and that's why the s2k wheel will not work without welding or modification to the spline. Just the same for putting a 5th gen wheel on a 4th gen, different spline sizes. I guess if the wheel will swap into a 5th gen, rule it out if you want it to be safe.
Bottom Line: the 4th gen interior's weak point is that steering wheel for sure.
I can eliminate for you a few that won't work... often times you will see civics with swapped s2000 wheels but I forget the model designation to be more specific. Either way these are not a direct fit. So that means any 5th gen Prelude wheels are also out of the question along with any of the Type R oem stuff from japan. So no civic jdm goodies or oem 5th gen prelude goodness.
When I bought my Prelude I was originally looking for a del sol. And before you grill me for that let me just say I am so glad I didn't find one when I was looking. I like the ludes much better. Regardless of my fondness for targa roadsters, I wasted a ton of time on researching the vehicle. I discovered that there were type R JDM steering wheels made for the integras early on that fit the del sol and older civics but not the civics post 96. A DC2 steering wheel perhaps? I wish I had a photo but its the one with perforated leather wrappings and separate horn buttons.
Still, I doubt any of these Integra type R steering wheels will fit. Or do they? I've never heard of it done and would think that if it was possible someone would have done it by now. Also, though not as eye catching, I would even settle for an old JDM NSX wheel. Its subtle but at least its smalled diameter 3 point wheel with an airbag and an H. But who knows about this one, it would be an expensive commitment.
Marrucci Motorsports (sorry if I'm spelling wrong here it has been awhile) is a member here and offers conversion of the s2k steering wheels for use in 4th gens. IIRC it is a flat fee, but you've got to send them a wheel. It's what I plan on doing soon.

is the spline size something thats published?
can we go through steering wheels that we like and look up specs of them to see if the splines will fit??

woha woha woah they do what??? what do they charge for a conversion like that? any more information on them? what it is they actually do? does evrything (airbag, cruise buttons) work afterwards?
It is halfway through the thread. Oh and it is Marcucci, I always get that wrong. Those are old posts but as far as I know he still offers the service.
We may be in luck. If that wheel spline from the bagless type R wheel is compatible with that column without modification then that means the integra type R steering wheels with airbags will work in our 4th gens. That is, unless the JDM Prelude column is different from the USDM. There is the airbag connector to conisder as well, might not be compatible.
Sorry, we're not doing this anymore. It's too difficult to do without damaging
the wheel and people generally aren't willing to pay for the labor and extra
wheel involved.
Damn that is bad news... I was hoping to have that done as well. Perhaps my hunch is correct and the JDM ITR wheel is compatible with 4th gen preludes. Check out these photos.
ITR Momo w/airbag
Custom 4th gen Prelude
Sure we can't count the teeth in there but I have high hopes especially after seeing that non srs Momo one above.
I kinda pushed for more info from Todd, they say that anything can be done with enough money, well i guess thats true! lol here is what he had to say:
The job requires:
- complete disassembly of 4g & S2k AP1 wheels
- protectively cover 4g wheel leather
- cut out center hubs of both wheels
- align s2k hub in 4g wheel
- weld 2sk hub in place on 4g wheel
- reassemble 4g wheel
- repin 4g cruise and airbag to work with s2k switches/connectors
It's around 6 hours of labor or ~ $300. There is no guarantee that we can fully
protect the leather of the wheel or get the new hub perfectly centered or
aligned.
So there is some slight potential for damaged (scorched) leather and that the
new wheel will require a 4 wheel alignment to be straight, as well as not spin
in a perfect circle when you turn the wheel. So far we've been pretty lucky but
I'm just waiting for one to not go right.
We can make the cruise work fine and no one really knows about the airbags. We
can hook it up but no one really knows if the airbags will work or not. We know
they should, based on what we know about airbags and that they hadn't changed
between introduction and 2-stage units from around 2004+ (around the AP2
introduction) but no one has "tested" the theory yet that I know of.
Personally, I would opt for a cheap hub and aftermarket wheel and no airbag.
Airbags were developed to help people that didn't wear seat belts. Dual stage
ones were developed to stop all the secondary, unnecessary injuries that
seat-belt wearers were experiencing.
I've driven a 5g, not much different than your 4g, into a wall at 70mph head-on
with no injuries and no airbag. Just an OEM seat belt.
All that said we'll be glad to attempt this if you provide us with a stock 4g
wheel w/cruise switches and wiring and an AP1 wheel with all the same.
