so my battery died...

and I need a new one...

so I know everyone's gonna say OPTIMA Yellow Top. They are rated at 13.8V-15V alternator charge capacity. My HELMS tells me that my alternator puts out only 13.5V. I called OPTIMA and they said that my Battery will never fully charge and that may cause premature wear. So I know a few of you guys have installed the Optimas... Any suggestion on the matter???? BTW this is valid for the Red Tops as well..

From 1994 helms, Nippon Denso alternator output is 13.5 V ... just get a red top, from what I hear it'll never let you down.

I've been running a red top for a couple of years now. No problems at all.

so I went through the Charging System troubleshooting in my helms and I still can't see where it says it should provide more than 13.5 in normal operating condition...

it doesn't matter, the Helms says 13.5, so that's your magic number.

uummm...

not to doubt the helms or anything.. but they might just use that number for safety reasons.. if you put a multi-meter up to the bettery terminal posts, the battery charges a lil above 14v

that would be the best real world way to check.. go to sears.. pick up a meter.. check your terminal with the engine at idle and with the engine at around 3k.. then you'll know what the alt puts out

13.5v might be at idle.. but it should go over 14v above idle

Anybody know the stats on the Odessey Dry Cell batteries? I know, it's a shot in the dark, but I bought one of their smaller batteries about 3 years ago, and the thing is STILL crankin' pretty hard...let's me down every now and then, and I can't really leave my stereo on for too long, but if you haven't considered an Odessey, I'd recommend them as well.

i've got an oddysey battery, too. one problem i see with it is the cold weather performance. it's cold crancking amps are terrible, and when my tranny went out, my car sat for a while over the winter. every week or two, i'd start it up just to keep the seals wet, but when it got into the mid 20's, the battery read 0v. the car ran fine after i started it, but as soon as i turned it off and tried to restart it, i got nothing again. this problem went away as the temps rose again. i think i may run a red-top in the future.
