should have bought those adjustable cam gears

im doing a jdm h22a swap and when I was putting my timing belt on (which took forever due to the new manual tensioner) I noticed it was impossible to get the tdc mark on the crankshaft and the marks on the cam gears to line up perfectly. I sat there for about 2 hours messing around to try and get it to fit just right and this is the best that could be done:

In the next picture the camera angle is a little off but the tooth on the cam gear is directly lined up with the mark on the block. (tdc) and yes I know its tdc because I took the head off.

This is still ok I presume? Its the closest I could come too, and there is no way to get them PERFECT unless I got those crummy goddang adjustable camgears.

Lesson learned. But the engine is going in SOON and don't really have the time to re-do the timing. I'm just making sure my marks are fine and getting a second opinion. thanks.

You don't need adjustable timing gears.

i thought you were supposed to lock them in with pins up top whenever doing a timing belt?

So basically it sounds like user error and not the car failing you.

I think thats only on the h23, because I don't think any of the cam holders have a "pinhole" to put anything through. So its not user error. And the timing belt won't fit like I said because when the cam gears are completely perfect the belt will not match on the teeth

Mine didn't line up perfectly when I changed my timing belt a few years ago. 30k+ miles later and the car is still running fine
