I heard from a couple people that shifting from 3rd to 5th saves gas? They're not the people who know much about cars and performance. Is there any truth in this? I can't see how this would help.
Well, since no one wants to answer this question, i'll give it a shot. The only reason that would save you gas is because your RPM's are alot lower in 5th gear than they are in 4th. The difference is minimal, and it's probably easier on your trans if you just take it to 4th, then into 5th.
When it all comes down to it, you could go 1st to 3rd to 5th and do the same concept as above, but i dont think it will help much, and your trans definintly wont like that. Do what you want though.
