Seafoam?

My buddy was telling me about Seafoam and I was a little skeptical. We put it in his Toyota 4runner and it smoked like hell for a few minutes and then the valves got quieter and the throttle response got noticeably better.
Here's my question: If I got a 95 Lude with 150K on it, I know there has got to be a lot of gunk in the top end. Can this stuff free up some large debris and do damage to my valvetrain? I would love to try it, but I know about Murphy's Law. Has anyone used this before? Results? Opinions...

To answer your question - yes it can. I have read reviews about it and all seem good until you get to the one that says "don't do it, it screwed up my car." My motor has about 150k on it and I want to try it just to see if it improves idle, gas mileage, etc but I don't want to screw up the motor. If I wasn't saving for another car or engagement ring (who knows...) then I would be "balls-to-the-wall" trying it to see what it does. My gf's maxima had the "carbon cleaned out" (probably the same thing as seafoam) at the dealer with 140k miles and her car ran great afterwards.

The people on here will probably give mixed reviews.

Oh, and after reading around on several sites about it last week - it seems to be in how you use it, not that you use it. For example - you should change your oil after you use it and not just let it sit in there since it is a solvent. I've heard of people pouring it in their gas tank, crankcase (where you put the oil), and sucking it in their intake.

Like I said, I want to try it, but don't want to screw up things right now. Maybe in a few months when I actually save some money from work.

I have used it on a bunch of cars. I can't possibly see how it can "screw up your motor" unless you pour the whole can into your intake. Definitely go for it. It requires 2 people to properly use it though.

Probably the only con I can think of from using a strong substance like this is that you run the slight risk of actually opening up vacuum leaks that otherwise the carbon build up was actually plugging, since it's an old car. Other than that, theres like a 3 page thread if I remember with 97% of the people giving it the thumbs up Def change your oil afterwards. You don't want that sludge getting right back to where it was before after you start the car again hehe.

How much do you put where? I read on one page that you do:

1/3 can in each: gas tank, intake/vacuum hose, crankcase

I would strictly avoid doing anything but the intake. Don't do the oil for sure - I know that most solvents hurt oil viscosity. Maybe you can do the gas tank; I wouldn't go overboard on that. My experience has been just to keep sucking it in a vacuum port until the car stops smoking like a forest fire.

Just to reiterate, any car with >100k mi will smoke like crazy. People will think your house is burning down. Be prepared for lots of smoke out the tailpipe.

If you do the oil anyways, be absolutely sure that you change it after about 20 miles or so. Don't leave it in there for very long.

seafoam

Yeah, 1/2 in intake vacuum hose and half in gas tank.
If you put any in the oil, change it quickly.
Let the fog machine begin!

i had a very good experience with it...

I put it in the oil first(1/2 can), the gas tank second(1 can), started the car and poured it in the brake booster(1/2 can). Of course it kept trying to die on me but you can just stop pouring it for a second until the idle comes back. Plumes of smoke will come out your exhaust, i serously couldn't see the house 100 ft in front of me. After this, go raise hell, stomp the gas, slam through gears, whatever. I came back to the house (10 miles tops) let it cool down and changed the oil.

After this the car ran SO much smoother. VTEC was kicking in as smooth as butter, i'd never heard another car's VTEC kick in that smooth. Also, instead of getting ~300 miles on a tank of gas, I got ~370.

I did it to my Maxima when i first got it as well. It ran smoother but it didnt have near as much smoke so it didnt impact me as hard as the prelude did.
