Sanding Noise when I'm going on the Freeway

I get this sanding noise after I drive a little bit on the freeway. Happens like after 15-20 min of driving. This only happens when I hit the accelerator, but it never happens in local driving. any idea?????? It's kinda like sandpaper sound. or like rough metal grinding on each other....strange...cars drives fine though....definetely coming out of the engine bay... bad distributor???

Put your hand or ear on the distributor cap. If it is definitely coming from the distributor then it's your distributor bearings going out. Mine are dying right now. Two days ago I heard the noise, me and my dad took it out and oiled the bearing. It went away, but I ordered a new distributor anyway.

Also, take of the distributor cap. If there is a lot of rust colored dust in there, it's a good indicator that it is indeed the bearings.

it only has the sanding noise on the freeway, and only when I hit on the accelerator, it never has happened on local streets or at idle. It's not the same as the screeching sound you get when you get a bad distributor. But the car will bog occasionally.

OK, I HAVE A SIMILAR PROBLEM, I don't know if it is the same thing but it sounds related.

When ever my car is on the freeway and i let OFF the gas, it makes a scratchy sound as it is pulling back. i definitley know nothing is rubbing.

so at a dea stop i get out of the car and push the accelorator with my hand inside the engine. I notice that as the car revs up it sounds fine, but when i let off as the car revs back down i can hear a very distinctive rakeing sound.

It is very much like the sound if you stook a spoon and moved it down an old metal ridged washboard very quickly. roll your toung and say rrrrRRRRip. that's what it does.

So after playing with the sound inside and out of the car and out, i found out that it only does it when the idle crosses 3500 rpms. And if i hold the throttle at 3500 rpms, then it will make this sound constantly!

If i hold it there, it sounds like a drum roll on a giant peice of tin. very fast, very rythmatic, and very metallic.

but my motor is the h23a, so i don't understand what could be makeing that noise.

my case is a little different, only happens after it get warmed up, and the sanding noise occurs only when I accelerate. at part throttle and mostly around the 3800RPM and 75-80mph. I dunno what it is, doesn't seem to affect the cars performance. Definetely is not the distributor, just got a new one. I dunno, pissed. Head Shield on the cat? If it is, I don't wanna remove it, too much heat coming outta that cat, How do I fix this? geez. So hard to troublshoot cause tough to replicate to tell a shop to fix it.

crap.

Well, I not sure of the down side of it being off,

but the car has more heatshields than just the one that covers the cat, there is also heat shields above the exhaust, and also along through the whole exhaust system.

Sound = to me it sounds like rattling metal, lol

but it could be possible considering your engine will sway a little if you are reving it up, That is if you havent changed your motor mounts, and also wind at 70 mph could be recreating that as well

Just try to pinpoint where you can hear the rattling , Might need a friend to help. If you can pinpoint almost exactly the area besides saying it coming from engine compartment , then you are narrowing it down better for anyone to give a good suggestion

so, basically, we can be pretty safe to assume that it is not something INTERNAL in the engine? Is this what i am gathering? ok, when i go to nopi i'll have some of you guys look at it with me.

By the way you have stated it I would think nothing internal, and you mention no performance problems, You could tho do compression tests, and leak down test just to make sure though, If that would make you feel more comfortable.

Hey I will be at Nopi as well, We are gong Sunday tho, better day to catch good prices on anything that looks interesting.
