Rust in rear quarter panels

how would a body shop go about fixing the notorious rust problem we have in our rear wheel wells?

Cut, weld and paint it. I have a little rust too . Waiting till it gets a little worst to take actions.

Do you mean finished with paint and everything or just finished welded without the paint?

I don't have any pics without paint, but there's plenty of pics around with perfect rear quarter panels.

I think they weld it first, then bend it or shape it. Then they sand it all down and paint it. I am going to guess that it'll probably cost around $800.

$800 are you nuts? i just got qouted for it the other day, one side is horid and needs to be welded, another is decent and just needs some bondo and paint and another rust spot on my a-pillar that needs sanded down and repainted, all that for $300, for another $1700 i can get the whole car repainted black too!

someone told me about this place around here that all they do is body panels. What you have to do is cut the area where you put the panel and leave about 1/2-1" of metal where you're gonna weld the panel and there's some tools you get that'll make some kind of bend in the metal and you put the new part over it, you weld it and you put a little bondo to fill the crack between the 2 parts and you paint and it's like new. That's what I'm gonna do on my car but that's not for right now so I can't tell you how it looks :P

$1700 for a black paintjob? ahhahaha
We usually charge under $1000 for your typical black/white paints.
Change shops.

and no, these aren't ghetto paintjobs.
Look at my car for an example.

I paint cars.
And I'm speaking from the standpoint that he is getting his car painted black. Black and white are the cheapest paints, and unless you add custom flaking, pearls, glow in dark., clearcoats, etc., then it's ridiculous to pay that amount. Especially while paying another $300 to get rust removed.

is there an advantage to sanding the entire car yourself and then having it painted? Would it be worth the money that would be saved?

I've had this done on my previous 4th gen and I couldn't even tell the difference when it was completed. They first cut out the problem area, then fabricate a piece of metal to the exact size and shape needed. It is then welded into place and sanded flat. Once everything is smooth and no visible lines can be detected, it will be primered and sanded for the final time. Then your paint is applied followed by the clearcoat.

What I already mentioned is the correct way to repair this. There is another way, but it isn't recommended. Cut the rusted area out then apply body filler.

I had the work done for $400 which included all the steps above and blending the door so the paint color difference could not be detected.

there is no way you can get that kind of work done for $300. not a good job anyway. rust will come back if you don't cut it all out.

i had this done on my 4g. only a bit but cost me $600. they cut out the first 3-4 inches of the whole wheel well. welded on a new piece. prepped and painted.

trust me, no body shop that is good at what they do is gonna charge you $300 for this work.

if you guys leave your rust too long, visually it may not look bad but under the paint it can spread. meaning, it could be as much as 5-6 inches higher then it is on the paint. that means you'd need a whole new quarter panel welded in which will cost you $1000 easy.

get those rust spots taken care of.

Thank you. This was why I said I GUESSED it'll be around $800, being the worst case scenerio. I got a friend who has a minor dent that cannot be pulled out, he paid a little over $1000 to cut and weld a new panel to it. Came out flawlessly.
