Running too Rich??

Hey Guys,

This is probably a stupid question and has been posted before, but is there any way to prevent my car from running too rich???
I was driving home the other night with my friend behind me(93 bright orange civic hatchback with a D15 ), and when we reached a straightaway I floored it in 3rd gear from 3k rpm to about 7k, (left him in the dust) and he told me I had thick black smoke coming from my exhaust.
I know black smoke is an indicator of running rich and also that Hondas are notorious for smoke, but he said there was a huge smoke cloud. I was wondering if there was any way to fix this problem w/o a A/F gauge or controller.
I checked my plugs and they were only partially black and my o2 sensor is only 10k old. What could be causing a rich mixture.
Also, if this has been posted before could someone reply with a link. I searched the forums, but to no avail. Thanks.

Also, my car has been kind of sluggish lately and I have a feeling that this is the problem.

correct over somewhere like 75 % throttle the car runs off the fuel maps in the ecu.

yes, when I change my oil every 3k miles, there is usually only a quart or two left. However, I have not noticed any oil leaks in the engine bay or on the ground when I park it.

No, that's not good at all, considering it takes almost 5 quarts to fill the pan.

you will get smoke when you "floor it" since it dumps as much fuel as it can.. All or most cars do this but since Honda has designed their engines to run a little bit richer than others, you get more smoke.

Yeah, but he's leaking oil BAD... either he's running TOO rich, or it's leaking somewhere out of the engine, or the pan itself.

our engines take 5.1 qts of oil to be exact Preyluder. and attilude93 you can get VAFC's for pretty cheap now (the version 1's) you should think bout investing in one if you want to lean out your mixture.

peace

thanks guys, I appreciate the feedbacks. I think I just dont like the fact that my car smokes even though Hondas are know to run rich. I think Im just over-critical of my car, b/c I took a look at the back of it when I had my friend floor it, and it wasnt too bad. Also, wouldnt any bolt-ons such as i/h/e cause the ecu to feed more gas to the engine since there is more airflow?? Oh well, I guess I'll have to live with the smoke

Can't you just disconnect the battery for like 30 min, and it resets the ECU? If you did that, bolt-ons wouldn't do that.
